TOS Review: ALEKS

Assessment and LEarning in Knowledge Spaces is a Web-based math program, using an artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. The program begins with an assessment test. The assessment took about 30 minutes to complete and tested in all areas grade-appropriate. It will give you a good starting point and enables the program to tailor content to what your student is ready to learn.

As you can see, Ben has a good grasp on Whole Numbers, but has limited mastery of the other pieces of the pie. Because of this assessment, we knew to exactly what areas needed lots of work. I realized that because of Ben's difficulty mastering his math facts, we had been spending too much time in an area he has already mastered pretty well, while neglecting to move forward. This pie chart is also the starting place for each days work, by clicking on a piece of the pie.

Each day that Ben worked in ALEKS, I allowed him to choose lessons in whichever area he wished, as long as it was not "green". ALEKS periodically reassesses the student to ensure that topics learned are retained, and then uses those reassessment results to adjust the course where needed. The courses are very complete in their topic coverage and avoid multiple-choice questions. I love that part. Last year, Ben was able to fool me all year with another math program that uses a lot of multiple choice questions. He was smart enough to deduce the correct answers without really having a good grasp on the subject matter.

Learning rates are high with ALEKS because the program is constantly monitoring the learning success of the student, deciding what the student is ready to learn, and presenting that material. The average historical learning rate with ALEKS is 90%,

Even though Ben showed decent mastery in the area of Whole Numbers, I'm still quite aware that he continues to struggle the memorization of his multiplication tables. So I was thankful to have this next area called, Quick Tables:

Here, you can see where Ben was working on some simple multiplication facts. The color-coded table makes it easy to see which facts he is mastering and which he still needs work on. This is my favorite part of ALEKS. Quick Tables is like flash cards, only because it's done on the computer, it doesn't seem quite as boring. Students are encouraged to answer quickly so that they are not taking time to count on their fingers.

This screenshot was taken early on in our review. After working in Quick Tables most every day, Ben has mastered many more of his multiplication facts. Quick Tables are available for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. If you prefer, there is also a printable worksheet option.

Another cool feature--when your student logs off the system, it automatically remembers where he left off when he logs back on the next time. Also, parents are given a master account to monitor progress and make assignments, if desired.

The course list is extremely comprehensive. From third grade through higher education and continuing education, ALEKS is sure to meet the needs of every student, both child and adult, in your home.

Overall, I would have to say that ALEKS was a hit for us. I like being able to easily see which areas Ben needs more work and he loves being able to see what he's mastered. For a child like Ben, who needs that instant feedback, ALEKS is perfect. I found that the method of teaching in this program meshed well with Ben's learning style. The pages were not immature and distracting like many online programs I've seen. This may not be as appealing for your younger students, but for Ben (5th grade), it was appreciated.

TOS Blog Cruise: Arlington National Cemetery

This week, the TOS Blog Cruise poses the question, "What has been your favorite field trip?" This is tough question, because we have been blessed to take many, many field trips over the past few years.

But when I asked Ben, he knew immediately which field trip I should tell you about. Because my husband is a federal employee, we have been able to travel to Washington DC on multiple occasions. Every time we go, there are 2 places we always visit: The Museum of Air and Space and Arlington National Cemetery.

Truth be told, Air and Space is probably Ben's favorite, but since the question was asked of me, not him, I'm going to take you on a tour of my favorite place, Arlington. These particular pictures were taken nearly 2 years ago.

Our first stop was at the Kennedy gravesite and the Eternal Flame....buried here are JFK, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and 2 of their children who died in childhood. Not far from the Eternal Flame are the simple gravesites of Robert Kennedy and Ted Kennedy, both marked with plain white gravestones and white wooden crosses.

Our next stop was at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, where we arrived in time to watch the changing of the guard . . . the changing of the guard is my favorite part of this field trip. I am so proud to be an American when I watch these young men. If you don't know much about these guards, be sure to click on the above link to learn more.

Our final stop was at Arlington House, home of Robert E. Lee. The house is currently being restored, so all of the furnishings have been removed. However, the view from atop this hill is breathtaking. It's said that JFK gave a speech from there and remarked that it was so beautiful he could stay there forever. He was assassinated 6 months later and was buried just below, where he lies in eternal rest. If you look at the pictures of Washington DC from the house, you can see several major memorials and monuments, including The Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and Jefferson Memorial. And yes, that's Ben climbing a tree in between Arlington House and the Kennedy gravesite. It broke his heart when a guard made him climb down.

I'm no chicken! {3 in 30 Challenge}

This is the first time I'm linking up to the 3 in 30 Challenge. Oh, I've known about it for awhile. I have friends who participate faithfully and I've watched as they set goals, take steps to achieve them, and come out victorious.

But I'm chicken.

Or I was chicken.

A couple of weeks ago, I put on my brave hat and started a new blog. Have you see it? Probably not that man people have. I've shared it with Facebook friends, but I haven't heavily promoted it. In my new place on the web, I share some personal issues I have with my weight and health. I even set goals and started a challenge to help others set goals. In an effort to be more transparent, and to seek accountability, I thought I'd start sharing some of those goals here as well.

So for February, these are the goals I'll be working towards:

1. Beginning my day with quiet time -- prayer and Bible study.
2. Sleeping 8 hours every night.
3. Drinking one green smoothie every day.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."

Worldview is the Key to Restoration

I want to introduce my readers to my dear friend, Valerie O'Rear. Valerie owns a Facebook page called, The Liberty Bellow, where her mission statement reads:

In this guest post she shares her thoughts and convictions on the necessity of a Christian worldview to the restoration of America . . .

God has opened my eyes to amazing things lately in my study of philosophies of worldview, government, and education.

Worldview is the key to restoring our land!

We have millions of "Christians" but they don't have a Biblical worldview, they don't live out His word, apply it to everything (family, work, politics, government, etc). Instead we've been taken captive by the secularists' socialist and evolutionary worldviews. Just because we don't identify ourselves as Marxists/Communists, doesn't mean we have not fallen prey to and taken hold of their ideas.

Various "Christians" have shared with me unbelievable and deeply-held pagan ideas they hold to; I'm sure you have your own examples. One told me that God sends transgendered people to earth to see if we pass God's "test." Many "Christians" have bought the lies "of the world" (Satan) and have adapted their Christian faith to fit the lies, rather than the other way around.

If one is truly a Christian, he must have his eyes open to this fact: It [whatever 'it' is] is either of God or of the world, Satan's purview. If one does not hold every thought, opinion, and idea up to what God says about it, then he is not holding to a Biblical worldview. The only other alternative is a PAGAN worldview. Either we have a Biblical worldview, or we have Satan's - it IS that clear. It IS that simple.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matt 6:24

Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world" John 18:36

God is a God of absolutes, not of gray areas. Either we believe in Him or not. Either we are saved or not. Either we obey Him or not. Either we submit to Him or not. If we love Him, we joyfully obey Him.

“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. ¹⁴Because^[a] narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it. Matt 7:13-14

For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3

“If you love Me, keep My commandments. John 14:15

We have a real enemy who hates God and those who love Him. Satan distorts and slightly twists truth; he doesn't deceive believers with gross misinterpretations, but subtle differences.

And [the serpent] said to the woman, “Has God indeed said,"... Gen 3:1

We all have been polluted by these pagan distortions, so therefore, we each have the individual responsibility to retake the land that Satan has taken captive - the mind. I cannot do it for you. You either choose captivity or freedom. How?

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2

If we do not know God's word, we will not know His will. His word and will - THAT is Biblical worldview.

THIS is the answer to restoring our land and liberty! If we don't renew our minds with a Biblical worldview, we will be held captive by both man and government with the continual march toward tyranny.

...where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Cor 3:17

PLEASE ask yourself these questions about everything:

1. What do I believe?

2. Why do I believe it?

3. Who has said it - God or man?

4. What has God said?

We have the duty to share this with all who claim to be Christians:

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ²⁰teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Matt 28:19-20

We must renew our minds and exercise a Biblical worldview. Then, and only then, are we ready to humble ourselves and thus, reap the reward:

if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 2 Chron 7:14

I sat my kids down the other day and explained, "I don't know what country we're leaving you. I am very sorry that we have squandered it, but I want you to know that your mom did every thing she could to preserve your liberty."

Do you get it? Will you join me? I don't normally beg for encouragement, but Satan uses isolation to discourage and defeat, so we must encourage each other in this battle.

TOS Review: Celestial Almanack

Amazing isn't it? The sky, I mean. Our family loves to lie down in the grass on a warm, summer night, staring up at the clear sky, counting the stars and finding constellations. Dad is pretty good at pointing out planets, too. It can be mesmerizing. And knowing that God knows each star by name . . . millions and millions of them. Wow!

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? ~Psalm 8:3-4

We often find ourselves wishing we knew more. Imagine how grateful we were to receive the February issue of classical astronomy expert, Jay Ryan's, new monthly publication, Celestial Almanack!

Written for ages 11 and up, this beautiful little treasure, a visual representation of the sky north of the equator, is published by Fourth Day Press, and is available as a download from Currclick. It is packed with celestial information for each particular month. True to the classical astronomy model, these visualizations are visible to the naked eye, no telescope required or even desired.

Inside you'll find a moon calendar, telling of the moons phases, coupled with some interesting tidbits of information for each day. As you gaze further into the almanack, you'll also find information about the sun's cycle, stars (such as Sirius, Procyon), constellations (such as Orion, Taurus, Canis Major), and planets (such as Venus, Jupiter). And this is just the tip of the iceberg. This almanack is jam-packed with information and things to see, learn, and do for the month of February. Each month's publication is specific to what you will see in the sky during that month. How amazing to compare the sky from month to month, season to season! I do wish there was some kind of journaling activity included, a place to record our findings. Instead, Ben is using his nature journal :)

Little did we know, we should be lying in the grass in the winter, looking up at the sky, for "the winter sky is the most beautiful sky of the entire year!" The stars are brighter and the atomsphere more transparent, making the stars shine even brighter! We have been missing out on so much by not looking upward on cold, winter nights (and days!). Not any more! Ben has gone outdoors every night this week to see what he can find. Unfortunately, we've had a lot of clouds and rain, but I'm certain he will not give up. He is loving this. He wants to be an astronaut, so these kinds of activities are his favorite.

The drawings in the almanack are beautiful, clear, and helpful to gain perspective as we're studying the sky. It is filled with many tips and explanations to help you truly understand what you are looking for and what's happening from day to day. There was a time in history when the sky was our calendar. People knew the day, time, and seasons just by what they could see in the sky. This classical astronomy approach takes us back to that time and gives us the tools to do the same. And it is a brilliant thing to behold.

As an added bonus to this review, let me also recommend some other items Jay Ryan has written. Signs and Seasons is his homeschool classical astronomy curriculum We've had this book as a part of our library for 2 years, and it is the one book Ben consistently pulls off of the shelves to peruse. While we haven't used it completely as a curriculum, I have plans to in Ben's middle/high school years for a science credit.

We also just purchased his new children's picture book, Moonfinder. Moonfinder is the story of a little boy who learns about the phases of the moon with his dad. Each page includes a full-color illustration (also painted by Jay) depicting the location and appearance in the sky of the moon at each phase, along with "celestial" views showing the corresponding position of the moon in it's orbit around the earth. With Moonfinder, every member of the family can learn how to follow the monthly cycle of the moon's phases! This book is absolutely delightful and is sure to become a favorite in your home!

TOS Review: Math Rider

I am always on the look-out for a fun math game for kids. As you've all heard me lament over the past several years, math just isn't Ben's best or favorite subject, so I am usually thrilled when we get the opportunity to review another math program.

This time, we are reviewing Math Rider.

MathRider is an intelligent math game that helps solidify math facts with all 4 math operations from 1-12. This is Ben's greatest area of struggle--memorizing his math facts. I dare say we are the perfect family to review this item!

With this computer-driven game, your student mounts a horse and rides through a make-believe land on a "quest". Quests include things like finding a magical flower or rescuing a princess. While he rides, the computer is gathering information about what he knows and doesn't know, stores that information and then customizes the game for your student. This was great for Ben, because once he has mastered something, he is ready to move on. He does not like continuing to answer the same questions over and over. Feedback is also given of the mastery of each number fact, for each operation.

Each operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) contains four quests, ranging from easy to master. The quests are the same in each operation, but the rewards change. Everything is automatically controlled, so that all your student needs to know how to do in order to play is key in numbers and hit enter. This makes the game easily played by kids of all ages. Recommended ages are 6-12.

Ben has enjoyed playing MathRider. He gets very excited to master a level and I have seen some improvement in his regular math curriculum because he is getting quicker with his multiplication math facts. I believe that he will continue to improve as he continues playing MathRider.

Friday Fun School ~ Today is a "sick" day . . .

Ben and I are both sick today. We've been fighting colds all week and yesterday, we were overcome.

Neither of us feels much like doing anything. So today, we will snuggle in bed, drinking hot apple juice and watching movies.

I heart Netflix.

We made it a game day, using many of the games I found very cheap while Christmas shopping,. I think we hit all of the main subjects -- math/logic, language arts, science, and social studies.

What's a work-at-home, homeschooling Mom to do?

I need help.

I stay up too late.

So does Ben.

I spend far too much time on the computer.

So does Ben.

I spend far too little time in the Word and in prayer.

I spend far too little time just talking with and reading to Ben.

We all spend far too little time doing family stuff.

We are not doing enough in school.

We are not serving others enough.

My house is a mess.

Time is speeding by, my son is growing up, I don't feel that I'm accomplishing nearly what I wish to.

So what's a work-at-home, homeschooling mom of one busy little bee, with a husband who travels too much, to do?

“Show me, O LORD, my life’s end and the number of my days; let me know how fleeting is my life. You have made my days a mere handbreadth; the span of my years is as nothing before you. Each man’s life is but a breath. ~Psalm 39:4-5

I wonder what I really would do if God did in fact show me my life's end, if I knew how many days I had left. What would I do differently?

I can promise you, I would do a lot differently! I must do things differently! Stewardship of my time has to be at the top of the list. Lack of discipline in this area affects EVERYTHING. Our ability to spend time in service, to spend time with each other, to spend time with friends. We end up exhausted and mired down by a list of things we didn't get done that is much longer than the list of things we did finish. But most importantly, Ben has told me that he's tired of talking to the back of my laptop. So convicting.

I need a schedule that would allot time for school, chores, quiet time, free time, and designated computer time and about 20 hours of work time for me. If I'm not careful, I will piddle away my day with email, Facebook, and job responsibilities and before I know it, the day is gone.

So last night, Ben and I sat down and devised a schedule of our week days. This is what it looks like:

8:30-9:00am Mom awake for quiet time
9-10am Ben awake, breakfast, morning chores. Mom breakfast, morning chores, quick check of email
10am-2pm school (no computer for Mom, lunch 12:30-1pm)
2-3pm afternoon chores
3-6pm Ben's free time, Mom's office hours
6-8:30pm dinner and family time
8:30-9:30pm Ben to get ready for bed, pick up room, read aloud time
9:30pm Ben to bed, Mom quick check of email
10pm-12mn Mom's free time
12mn Mom to bed

We began today and things went really well. Ben's attitude was better and I felt much more accomplished. Let's pray it sticks!

iEducation for the Homeschooler

Last year, I finally bit the bullet and purchased the iPod Touch 4G. Truth be told, I really want an iPad, but I've decided to wait until the next generation comes out. I was thrilled with this little gadget, still am, but then Amazon shook things up just in time for Christmas with the Kindle Fire. So now I have both.

I really enjoy both of these tech advances and so does Ben. While Ben would probably prefer to spend all day playing Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja, one of my favorite things to do is seek out useful apps for homeschooling.

I like FREE, so most of what I'll tell you about will be FREE apps. But on occasion, there is one worth paying for. So here are my favorite iPod Touch (iPhone/iPad) and Kindle apps, for keeping me somewhat organized and for homeschooling on the go!

Apps for iPod Touch

Amazon Kindle Free Downloading books is easy with the Kindle app.  You might think the iPod is too small to read a book from, but surprisingly enough, I can read just fine. It's great when you're out and about, at a Dr.'s visit, or waiting in line pretty much anywhere. I read to Ben or Ben reads to himself quite often. We even use it at night for Bible reading. Check this out, if you're looking for some books to read about homeschooling.

Good Reader $4.99 This one is not free, but it is worth it. If you have .pdf or other files you need to read, this app is for you!

Evernote Free If you're like me, one of those people who never has pen and paper to jot down notes, phone numbers, little things you need to remember, then this app is for you. You can create text, audio, or photo notes and then sync them to your computer. I use it for homeschool planning and work stuff, in bed, late at night, when I can't sleep. Last week, I used it to take notes during the sermon. My pastor will be happy to read this. He probably thought I was playing game :)

Google Earth Free Just like the desktop version, you can travel all over the world with this app!

The Oregon Trail  Free Yep, the fun pioneer adventure game.....take it with you!

Brain Quest $2.99  How many of us have Brain Quest cards in the back seat? I know I have at least 3 year's worth somewhere, and I paid more than $2.99 for them! Now you can have them on your iPod!

Brain Pop  Free We love the educational videos on Brain Pop online. With this app, your kids can watch a new video every day.

Vocabulary Power Plus Free SAT words. Four lessons for free, with more available for purchase.

Mad Libs  Free We have always loved the book version of Mad Libs at our house. It's pretty much all I used for grammar instruction in K-3 grade. This app is free for the sample version. If you like it, there are paid versions as well.

Flash Tables $0.99 I'm always looking for math reinforcement, especially with multiplication tables. This app works well for math in the car.

World Geography Challenge $.99 This app has helped a lot as we are traveling the world this year. It's fun, and it makes learning countries easy.

Stack the States $.99 or Free in Lite This fun U.S. geography game will keep kids (and adults) of all ages entertained while learning bits and pieces of the 50 states.

United States Geography Flash Cards Free This simple add shows the state name, flag and population on one side and then, on the flip side, where it is on the map, capital city, largest city, and date of statehood.

Art Museum  $0.99 With this app, you and your kids can learn to recognize a lot of paintings, along with the artist names. As a fun addition, it plays classical music while you play :)

Dinosaurs: The American Museum of Natural History Collections: Free This app is so cool. It presents the museum's collection in mosaic form. Just tap the mosaic to bring up the image, then read all about it. Ben loves this one.

Apps for Kindle Fire

Let's do the math FREE Covers basic math -- addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Word problems, too!

Periodic Table FREE With the Periodic Table app, you can learn all about the elements. Access tons of chemical and physical properties for each element. Get help on pronunciation with audio clips. Find elements by browsing the table, searching, or the index. Even test yourself with quizzes.

50 States FREE 50 States is a great way to learn about each state. Cozi Family Organizer FREE Manage a centralized family calendar, set reminders so no one misses an appointment, create a shared grocery list and take it with you shop, jot down a special moment, add a photo from your gallery. Everything you need to keep your family organized is in this app!

{Project 52} I Dreamed a Dream

This week's theme at Project 52 is "I Dreamed a Dream".

These pictures are from our homeschool square-dancing co-op--Dancing for the Lord. Twice a month we meet together to square dance, once for practice, and once to dance for residents in a local long-term care facility.

As I looked at the pictures of all the children, I couldn't help but imagine what Martin Luther King, Jr. would think. How proud he would be. I also think about how grateful I am that his dream didn't have to be my own. His dream has become reality.

For me, these pictures represent a different dream -- the dream of being a mom, homeschooling, friendship, service. So many blessings.

FREE Kindle books for your kids . . .

I love my Kindle. I now have both the keyboard version of the original Kindle and a new Kindle Fire. While I prefer reading books from the original Kindle, I like that having both allows Ben to read with one of them, while I read from the other.

If you don't have a Kindle, no worries. You can download Kindle for PC for free. There are also Kindle apps for iPad and iPod, as well as Droid.

Amazon frequently runs freebies on books for the Kindle, but did you know there are many, many books that are always free? 5 Things You're Sure to Find in Our Homeschool

This week's Blog Cruise with the TOS Homeschool Crew poses the question:

What is a day in the life of your homeschool like?

I had to really stop and think about this question for a few days. I can't say that our homeschool looks the same from day to day. We are pretty delight-directed, so I often have no idea what's going to happen, until we're in the midst of learning. But as I pondered the question, I did come to the conclusion that there are some mainstays in our homeschool, some things that are constant. These are the things I will share with you. So here you go -- 5 Things You're Sure to Find in Our Homeschool.

1. Bible study. We try very hard to begin our day in the Word. Right now we are being guided by Apologia's What We Believe series, specifially, Who Is God, which we really love. Ben also has memory verses/chapters he's working on daily.

2. Books. Lots of books. We read every day. I read silently. Ben reads silently. I read aloud to Ben. Ben reads aloud to me. It's our primary mode of learning. We instituted the "book basket" idea into our homeschool several years ago and have never looked back.

3. Computer time. There are various ways in which we use the computer in our homeschool. From online video learning, such as Kahn Academy, to preparing reports with Powerpoint, chances are at some point during the day, you will find Ben on the computer.

4. Lapbooking/Notebooking. Because we primarily use a the unit study method for our homeschool, we wouldn't have much to show for all of our work with lapbooks or notebooks.

5. Games. We play lots of games --word games, math games, logic games -- almost every day.

{Project 52} Made with Love

I'm beginning a week late, but I've decided to join in the Project 52 Photo Challenge over at Life with My 3 Boybarians. Darcy has chosen a theme for each week's challenge. This week's theme is "Made with Love".

I know, you're wondering what on earth this picture depicts and what it has to do with love.

A few weeks before Christmas, my sweet friend, Miriam, who works faithfully in local prison ministry, put out a call on Facebook for folks to help support an idea she had. She wanted to bless 700 inmates at our local women's prison with gift bags. The bags would contain deodorant, toothpaste, a toothbrush, a bar of soap, candy, and a Christian bookmark. She had about 3 weeks to put this together. It would take a Facebook village to make it happen.

This picture was taken the day we gathered together to assemble the bags. This photo represents 700 bags of love.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

TOS Review: Maestro Classics

Classical music has always been a part of our home. My husband and I met at our local Center for the Arts, when we were both attending a ballet. One of my first purchases when Ben was born was one of those Baby Mozart DVDs.

Throughout our homeschooling, the listening to and learning about classical music, while not always a daily subject, has been right there in the schedule. Ben loves it. I love it. Dad loves it.

Maestro Classics produces a classical music CD series for children ages 6-12. Both entertaining and educational, these CDs have won more than 45 national awards. Each CD features performances by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as fun, child-friendly stories and musical explanations.

One of my very favorite composers, and probably by proxy, Ben's favorite, is Tchaikovsky. Ben even has The Nutcracker Ballet on his iPod. So when we received The Story of Swan Lake, from Maestro Classics, to review, we were both ecstatic. Neither of us had listened to their CDs before.

In The Story of Swan Lake, we learned that Tchaikovsky was "emotional and very tied to his mother" as well as "untidy". Ben now believes himself to be the next Tchaikovsky. Love.

That track "Speed Metal Swan" . . . I had to rewind and play that no less than 10 times. Ben though it was very cool. I mean how often do you get to hear a loud/rock/bass guitar version of Tchaikovsky? Awesome.

The CD comes with a 24-page educational activity booklet which includes a biography of Tchaikovsky, information on acoustic and electric guitars, sheet music and words for the sing-along song, a crossword puzzle, a maze, and an explanation of major and minor keys.

Maestro Classics has a mission statement: To cultivate a love of music through education and joyful performances. I do believe they are well on their way with this lovely CD.

TOS Review: Zeezok Publishing -- Z-Guide to the Movies

We love movies at our house. Rarely does our book basket not have at least a couple of videos to add to our learning. We use them for Friday Fun School, when someone is sick, or just to enrich our unit studies. Ben responds well to learning more about a subject in this manner, and I love anything that helps Ben learn.

We were recently given the opportunity to review the Z-Guide to the Movies from Zeezok Publishing. The Z-Guide we received was for the 1938 Errol Flynn version of The Adventures of Robin Hood. The movies do not come with the Guides, but we were able to download this one to our Kindle Fire. Can I take a quick moment to say how much I love our new Kindle Fire :). Netflix and your local library are also good options for these movies.

Back to the Z-Guide. The guides are broken down into historical time periods and arrive in PDF format to your inbox. The guide begins with a movie synopsis and review questions, however most of the discussion questions and activities center around the historical time period, rather than the movie itself, so your student will have the opportunity to tie in historical fact with what is likely an historical fiction movie. Brilliant. For our study, we were able to discuss topics such as the feudal system, chivalry and civil disobedience. One of our daily activities was target practice. Ben was able to put his new bow and arrow into practice. Love.

There are many other activities that will help build character and develop a worldview in your students. I love the idea of having a guide to use with movies we add to our book baskets. I'm sure we will be purchasing these guides in the near future. In fact, our next purchase will be for Johnny Tremain to enhance our early American History study this spring.

The year of JOY!

For years, I have chosen a word to guide me in the new year. Last year, my word was contentment. Other years, I have used focus and love.

As I have spent some time pondering what my word for 2012 should be, I am reminded that so many times over this past year, I have said the words, "I'm not going to allow that (you, her, him) to steal my joy."

Joy. What a great word.

Why is joy so important that I want to keep it safe from anyone and anything trying to taking it away? A few minutes of searching the Scripture for verses with joy has helped piece that together for me . . .

The joy of the Lord is your strength. ~Nehemiah 8:10

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. ~James 1:2-3

Weeping may remain for a night, but joy comes in the morning. ~Psalm 30:5

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. ~Romans 15:13

Joy comes with a lot of amazing friends. No wonder we work hard to protect it. 2011 has been fraught with circumstances which I have allowed to sneak joy away from my heart. A tough diagnosis, the loss of my mom, parenting and marital difficulties, re-evaluating friendships, leaving one church and finding a new one, gossip, poor attitudes, challenging days, challenging nights, suffering friends, sick children . . . I could go on and on. We can find so many excuses every day to not be joyful. And frankly, I am sick of allowing it to happen.

So I declare 2012 to be the Year of Joy. And nothing will separate us.

Resolution or Inspiration?

How many January 1st's have you begun with a list of resolutions?

Lose weight
Exercise more
Read the Bible regularly
Get organized
Keep in touch better
Volunteer

And the list goes on and on. Those visits to the gym last a few weeks, one or two closets get cleaned out, that new devotional is read daily for awhile, you might even have lunch with that friend you haven't seen in 2 years. But by March, the resolutions have gone by the wayside and life is back to "normal." It's ok, you can start again next January 1, right?

There's a reason New Year's resolutions don't work.  Resolutions don't inspire. They begin with things to "do" instead of inspriring you want to "become" something different. Why do you want to lose weight? Perhaps to become more confident. Why do you want to declutter your house? Maybe to feel more peaceful. Why do you want to volunteer? Probably because you desire to become more generous. The resolutions are more about the end results....who we become....but the focus is so much on what we need to do, that we lose the inspiration to succeed. We get discouraged because we stopped going to the gym, missed a few days of the devotion, or ate a piece of pie. We failed.

So what would happen if instead of choosing things to "do" differently, we chose to "become"
different in some way. Not completely different.  We are fearfully and wonderfully made. But chances are, if you have a lot of New Year's resolutions rolling around in your head, then you probably have something about yourself that you'd like to be different. And who doesn't have something that could use a little tweaking?

This year, instead of making that fateful list, try choosing a word that reflects the changes you need to make in your life. Find a word that you believe will inspire you to work toward becoming, not just doing. Search scripture for your word. Keep it in your mind, post it around your house where you'll see it every day, contemplate it. Ponder. Let your word guide you into action.

Don't make resolutions you know you won't keep. Be inspired this New Year.

I'm still praying on my word for 2012. I'll let you know what I come up with.

A look back at 2011 . . .

2011 is now in the past. 2012 is freshly upon us, staring us in the face, waiting to see what we'll do with it. But before we take on the challenges of the new year, I wanted to take a moment to look back at this past one. Not to dwell on it, just to remember a few fun or impactful moments. Come join me on a trip down memory lane, won't you?

In January, Ben and I began the year with gratitude and a challenge.

In February, we celebrated Heartschooling Day.

In March, a natural disaster took our homeschool week off course, in a good way.

In April, I re-evaluated my priorities.

In May, we took an Extreme Homeschool Field Trip and watched history come alive! --Day1, Day 2, and Day 3.

In June, our family spent some time reading, relaxing, and hanging out at the beach.

In July, I took a short-lived stab at becoming vegan to help with my Lupus symptoms.

In August, I got a heart-wrenching lesson in love.

In September, Ben was stung by a wasp, but that didn't keep us from having fun with our Nature Club! We also took a friend with us on a trip to Nashville!

In October, we had great fun picking apples!

In November, our lives were changed forever, but we were left with the memory of her smile.

And in December, we looked for joy in the season, despite our sadness and my boy celebrated a birthday of his own.

Bring on 2012, we are ready for some new adventures!

Have you ever felt the desire to do something that is going to effect whole lot of people?

But then you realize you are just one. You can not make a difference.

We have all had those feelings. It is how you choose to take those feelings and act, that shapes who you are, and your purpose in this world.

We are just three teenage girls.

We have a passion.

We have a love.

We have a hope.

We have a vision.

And, we have chosen to act.

Sunny is 20. She has a 19 year old brother who has Down syndrome. She lives in London.

Savana is 20. She has a 3 year old sister who has Down syndrome. She lives in America.

I, Taylah, am 16. I have a 3 year old cousin who has Down syndrome. I live in Australia.

Each of us have an intense love for someone with Down syndrome. We see them in a way most of the world choses not to.

Did you know that 90% of babies with Down syndrome are aborted before they get to enter this world? 9 out of 10! Their lives are taken because they have a disablility. It just doesn't seem right, does it?

Did you know that in Eastern Europe, children with disabilities, such as Down syndrome, are left orphaned at birth? They live in an orphanage until they are 5 years old. Once they turn 5 they are placed in an adult mental institution where conditions are so horrible most don't survive a year. With adoption costing over $30,000 it is likely that most of these children won't ever see outside the walls of a crib.

When we were given the facts we decided that it was too devistating to just sit back. We decided to ACT!

'To love the unloved' was founded in December, 2010.Since then, we have helped fund the adoptions of 13 precious children! Each month we host giveaways for a child or family from Reece's Rainbow (an adoption ministry that helps find homes for orphans with Down syndrome) on our blog! There are so many ways that you can help 'To love the unloved' out! Firstly, you can give a donation and enter the give away! Mommy ponderings . . .

Few things are more memorable to a mother than the birth of her first-born. Mothers all have a birth story to tell . . . whether it's a story of a difficult labor and delivery or long-awaited adoption.

I love telling Ben's adoption story. There has never been another event in my life, before or after his birth, that has convinced me more of God's gracious love for His children and His desire to grant us the desires of our hearts.

Mary, the mother of Jesus, has a story that is a little different. Young, single, poor, betrothed to a poor carpenter, she wasn't the most likely candidate to usher in the world's Savior. She was going to have a birth story like no other.

Far away from home, she gives birth and lays her precious baby, the long-awaited Messiah, in a feeding trough. And then, just as she and her husband are getting used to the idea that they were now the parents of a baby boy, who shows up? Shepherds. Strangers. Oh, they were on a mission, of course. Visited by angels and a choir of heavenly hosts, they were instructed not only to go see the new baby, but given specific details of where to find him. But I'm guessing Mary and Joseph weren't expecting visitors that night.

Can you imagine? I remember when Ben was born. I couldn't wait to show him off to my friends and family. I couldn't wait to share the story of his birth and adoption. We were SO amazed at this precious miracle. I'm sure Mary felt the same way. She was probably anxious to share with her friends and family, too. Instead she was visited, in the middle of the night, by dirty, smelly shepherds, who came to see what all the fuss was about.

I've often wondered what on earth was going through her mind. How much did she really understand about this special baby?

Mary . . . did you know?

In Luke, chapter 2, we find that after the shepherds have followed all the angels' instructions, found the baby exactly where they were told he would be, wrapped in strips of cloth, that they went out and spread the word, amazing everyone who would listen. Don't you just hate it when someone tells your good news before you do?

I'm sure the shepherds shared with Mary and Joseph about the angels visiting them in the field, about the choir of heavenly hosts praising God, and about how they were told where exactly to find them. I'm not sure how I would react to all of this, but we know how Mary responded:

But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. (Luke 2:19)

This was Mary's birth story. Just like every new mother, she began storing up the memories of her son's birth in her heart, so that later, just like every new mother, she would have a story to tell.

When Jesus was a month old, his parents took him to the temple for his consecration, and they meet a man named Simeon. The Holy Spirit had revealed to Simeon that he would see the Messiah before he died. When he held the baby, he knew this was the Savior and spoke these words:

“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you may now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all nations: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel."

That had to be a "wow" moment for a mother.

And then at age 12, at another visit to the temple, during Passover, we find more memories for Mary. This time they leave the temple, not realizing Jesus has stayed behind. After traveling for an entire day, they realize he's not with them and have to go back to Jerusalem. If they're anything like me, I'm sure they were not happy with him. They didn't really understand him when he asked, "Why were you searching for me? Didn't you know I would be in my Father's house?" But they must have known it was important, for once again, we read these words:

But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. (vs. 51)

I'm imagining, by this time, Mary has stored up all kinds of things in her heart. I mean really, a perfect child? Some days I think I ponder more on Ben's imperfections, but I digress.

I think all along Mary was seeing glimpses of who Jesus was becoming. Those are the things she treasured and pondered in her heart. God was revealing to her, moment by moment, year after year, His plan for the life of her baby boy. While she treasured the moments, she likely pondered on their significance.

We do that, too, don't we? God gives us glimpses into what our children are becoming and we ponder on the significance of these things. We see a child who is good at speaking and loves the Bible, so we ponder whether or not he may become a pastor some day. We watch our daughter's gift of service to her younger siblings and ponder what kind of mother she might be. I often wonder where Ben's incredible debate skills will lead him!

I can't imagine pondering on the future of the Messiah. Simeon gave Mary a glimpse into what was to come. I'm not sure she really got it. Or maybe she did, but her faith was so great that she knew whatever happened, it was all a part of God's plan.

Perhaps, little by little, God was preparing Mary for the day she would stand at the foot of the cross, while her son, despised and rejected, would be pierced, and bruised, and beaten, and spit upon, and hung on a cross to die for the very people who put him there.

I imagine that all of the words that had been spoken to her, all she had observed as Jesus was growing up, all of those moments she had treasured and pondered, came flooding back to her at that moment. I imagine those are the things that sustained her in what was undoubtedly the worst moment of her life.

I can almost relate to that. There are days, we all have them, when we wonder what on earth is going on. We have wow moments and moments we don't understand. We hear words from others about our kids and wonder what it all means. As our children grow in independence, we find ourselves confused about what they are doing, and yet we must stand back and allow the growing up to happen. And along the way, we too, are storing up treasures and memories, and pondering these times, so that some day, we can also helplessly, but faithfully, watch our children fulfill God's plan for their lives.

So, as you go through your busy, sometimes trying days, don't forget to ponder. It is what we treasure in our hearts that will sustain us.

It's the most wonderful time of the year!

We still don't have our tree up. There are boxes from Toys R Us and Amazon stacking up in the living room. I haven't even begun to bake. The Christmas cards haven't even been picked up from Wal-Mart's photo center. And all of the wonderful books we usually read Christmas week are still at the library (or already checked out by moms who are much betting at planning ahead than I).

So what's a mom to do?

Breathe and reboot.

This coming week, we will work hard at getting ready to celebrate our Savior's birth. We will exchange gifts with friends, mail our Christmas cards, bake some cookies, decorate the tree, and read. We have plenty of books about Christmas on our shelves, but more importantly, we have Luke, chapter 2.

The tree may not be the best decorated and we may have to skip all the crafts and extra decorations this year.

But we will have Christmas JOY. We will remember. We will probably even cry as we think about past Christmases with Nana.

But most of all we will celebrate the One. The One without whom we wouldn't even have this blessed season.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ~Isiaah 9:6

May you find JOY in this Christmas season, whatever your circumstances.

TOS Review: I See Cards--Fractazmic

Last year, Ben and I reviewed a super-fun math card game, Pyramath, from I See Cards. It was our very favorite review product of the year! Ben still loves playing Pyramath. So when we were given the opportunity to review another card game from I See Cards, we jumped at it!

The card game for this review is called Fractazmic. Fractazmic is a fun and engaging card game that uses math and language skills to teach fractions and measurement.

There are several variations of the game, but Trap was one game that Ben and I played several times. The object of Fractazmic Trap is to gather as many hands as possible before the first player runs out of cards. Hands are captured by either (1) playing a card that brings the sum of all cards thrown to 1 or (2) forcing the next player to throw a card that brings the sum to greater than 1. If any of these events occur – the player captures the round and is the first to start the next round. This video will give you a more visual idea of how Trap is played:

I should preface our opinions about Fractazmic with a disclaimer. If you have read my blog much you know that math is not Ben's favorite or best subject. To be honest, fractions are something we are just now getting started with in 5th grade, beyond playing with simple measurements. So this game was challenging at first. In fact, we began with just playing with one suit of cards at a time, until Ben understood that suit well, then we played with the next suit, and then the next. After several plays we were finally able to put all 3 suits together into one game. In the beginning, Ben was a bit frustrated, but I believe that's due to his aversion to math, rather than the game itself.

Fractazmic is recommended for grades 1-8, 2-4 players. There really are several adaptations to the game which make it suitable for this age span, though I do believe your students grades 4-8 will get the most benefit.

Happy birthday to my boy!

"I prayed for this child, and the LORD has granted me what I asked of him. So now I give him to the LORD. For his whole life he will be given over to the LORD." ~1 Samuel 1:27-28

You, my sweet boy, are 11 years old today. It's hard to believe. Time is racing. Oh, how I wish I could make it stand still for a moment . . . or forever.

Your boyhood is fast coming to an end. You are changing and growing and loving and living. You work hard and you play hard.

You are funny. And emotional. You feel everything to your core. Happiness, sadness, compassion, love, fear, anger, excitement. It's all the most extreme it can be. I love that about you. There is no in between. You are who you are, and you don't care what anyone thinks about it.

You have a wonderful heart. Your depth of compassion for small children and animals is unmatched. You are at your most tender with them. You adore your friends. And your momma. (you kinda like your dada, too)

You still love to snuggle. I am so grateful for that. Don't forget, you promised you will still snuggle with me when you're 16 :) (I know you were only 3, but I'm still holding you to that promise)

You are all boy. You run and jump . . . over, under, around, and off . . . everything. Your energy is palpable. You are busy. All. the. time.

As much as I miss the little boy you were, I am excited for the young man you are becoming. I know that God has amazing plans for your life. I know that as you leap into these preteen years, He will mold you and grow you and teach you all that you need to know. Please be still and listen.

I am so blessed to be on this journey with you. I hope you know how loved and cherished you are. I love you truly, madly, deeply. I love you more. You are the greatest gift I have ever been given on earth.

Time for the mid-year shift . . .

. . . or something like that.

I'm not sure what else to call it. I'm having one of those "oh my goodness, we are so behind!" kind of moments. I think it's a normal feeling for many homeschoolers this time of year, but for us, it's so true. Taking off a couple of months during my mom's illness, death, and all that goes along with dealing with what comes after, has really set us back a bit. I'm trying not to stress about it, truly I am. People keep telling me the life lessons he's learning right now are invaluable. Personally, I'd rather he not have to learn those right now though.

I recently mentioned my plan to move more toward unschooling. Well, for some reason, it's making me nervous today, not to have a plan in place. Maybe because right now the only thing Ben cares to learn more about is Mine Craft. Have your kids discovered this computer game yet? Wow! Or maybe it's the realization that this is our last year of "elementary" school. Why does "middle school" sound so much scarier?

So, because things have not been very normal around here, I think I will need to make "some" plans, have some minor structure, for the rest of the school year. Mainly just a focus on the 3Rs, with plenty of room for Ben to still explore. Christmas is coming, and he's getting some cool gifts that I think will help spark his imagination. I'm not going to say more about that, because he likes to read my blog!

Anyway, today we looked at a video at Kahn Academy and completed a math worksheet from Math Mammoth on scientific notation. I was regretting that choice at first, but eventually Ben "got it" and it became fun to give him problems to work on the whiteboard. We'll continue doing fun math like that and since he really liked the Kahn Academy video, I think we'll continuing watching those, especially for concepts he's struggling with.

I also want to focus more on writing. Ben has been asking for a journal, so we got one. I plan to have him write in it each day, sometimes just whatever he wants to write, other times, with more direction. He takes an IEW class twice a month, so I really need to spend some time reinforcing those concepts. But I need to think on how to do that in a way that will encourage him to write, rather than freak him out. He's easy to freak out with writing assignments, unless I'm writing while he dictates.

Lastly, we really need to bump up the amount of time he spends reading. When he so quickly became obsessed with Mine Craft, I quickly made a rule that he must read an hour for every hour he plays. I wouldn't say we've stuck to that completely, but we're working toward that goal. I'm developing a reading list for the remainder of the school year, leaving room for his personal choice, while making sure he reads some books I would like for him to read.

Other than that, I'll leave the rest of our school day open for him to follow his interests, explore with science tools, play and create.

Just typing this out, I feel better already :)

TOS Review: Math Mammoth

Math. Just the word can make most homeschool moms shake in their boots. It has been the one subject that has had me considering public school on more than one occasion. It has been a struggle to find that perfect fit for us. We've tried it all -- computer-driven, DVD-driven, workbooks, living math, everything that everyone has promised is THE math program that will cause Ben to love math. At this point, I don't even care if he loves it, I just want him to do it without so much complaint that I want to pull my hair out.

Math Mammoth has us well on our way. Math Mammoth offers all of their products in downloadable form and most in printed form. They have products for grades 1-8. The downloadable version PDFs are enabled for annotating. This means that the student can actually complete the PDF file on the computer, using the typewriter and drawing tools available in Acrobat Reader version 9 or higherm, or on a tablet device such as an iPad, using a PDF app that has annotating tools.

Math Mammoth can be purchased several different ways. Choices include:

Math Mammoth Light Blue Series: This is their full elementary math curriculum for grades 1-6. Each grade level consists of 2 worktexts (A and B), as well as supportive materials, such as answer keys, tests, cumulative reviews, and an additional worksheet maker.

Math Mammoth Blue Series: These are worktexts (textbook and workbook combined) on specific topics. Topics include addition, subtraction, place value, clocks, money, measuring, multiplication, division, fractions, etc.

Math Mammoth Golden Series: These are worksheets by grade and contain 120-150 worksheets per grade, for grades 3 through Algebra (grade 8 or 9).

Math Mammoth Green Series: These are workbooks by topic. Topics include numbers/operations, addition/subtraction, multiplication/division, decimals/fractions, measuring, geometry, etc.

Make It Real Learning: These workbooks contain problems or activities taken from real life situations. They show how math is useful!

We received 3 products:

We chose to do workbooks from the Green Series so that we could use it alongside our usual math curriculum. I loved being able to print off worksheets to give Ben extra practice in whatever our math topic of the day was. Interestingly, as he worked through more and more problems, and became more skilled, he gained much more confidence. This confidence lead to more tolerance of math in general. I would love to say that it led to a new found love of math for him, but that would not only be stretching things, it would be a true miracle!

Ben also really enjoyed the activities from the Making It Real book. The first activity he did was on the population of Australia. Since we had done a unit study on Australia last year (which he loved), he found doing these math activities interesting and fun.

Marshall Publishing and Promotions, Inc. is a multi-faceted media publishing organization. Their goal is to provide lots and lots of media fun for everyone through award-winning DVDs, Books, CDs, CD-roms, and broadcast and internet programming that will amaze, amuse, entertain, and educate. They are an Illinois Corporation having been in business since 2007.

They are known for their Award –winning AS SEEN ON TV videos such as Lots & Lots of Trains, and Lots & Lots of Fire Trucks. These DVDs are not readily available in stores but can be purchased from the website.

I was sent the DVD, George Washington Carver: His Life and His Work.

Born into slavery and reared during the Reconstruction years in the South, George Washington Carver struggled through poor health, poverty and prejudice…to become a great benefactor, not only to his people…but to his country as well. Carver is known in history books as the “peanut man” – for his research into and promotion of alternative crops to cotton. As one of the world’s foremost experts in agriculture and horticulture, Carver, through his research and teaching at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama practically reinvented land management in the South. He is said to have compiled a list of over 300 uses for and by-products of peanuts such as cosmetics, dyes and paints, plastics, gasoline and nitroglycerin.
But his work as a creative scientist stretches far beyond that endeavor. He marveled at the world around him and his ability to inspire those closely associated with him may well have been one of his greatest lifetime achievements. As a living example of the importance of hard work, a positive attitude and a good education, Carver was instrumental in changing the stereotype of the time that the black race was intellectually inferior to the white race.

I usually try very hard to balance my "review" blog posts with heart felt and informative blog posts. But because of my Mom's recent illness and passing, I am way behind on reviews. TOS was gracious to give me a leave of absence over the past several weeks, but now it's time to pay the piper. I have received many awesome items to check out, so over the next 7-10 days, I will be posting quite a few informational curriculum and product reviews.

We're still working hard at emptying my Mom's home, so I'm not sure there will be much time for "real" blogging. So please forgive me in advance.

My Momma . . .

This is my Momma. This picture was taken 14 days ago, just 2 days before she went Home. You see that smile? Everyone saw that smile. Every day. Hospital nurses, housekeepers, doctors, her friends and family. Everyone. It revealed her joy.

Just 12 days before her homegoing, Mom was told she had an incurable, untreatable, rare and aggressive form of cancer, called Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer. I was with her when the oncologist gave her the news. There were no tears, no gasps, not even a shocked look on her face. She simply responded with these words: "The day I was born, God wrote in His book how many days I would live. And I plan to live every one of them."

And live them she did. With more grace than you can imagine.

I thought there would be more than 12. I'm not sure what Mom thought. We didn't talk about that. We did talk about many other things. And although 12 days wasn't a long time, I think Mom was able to say all she needed to say to everyone she wished to. That's such a gift.

Not once in those 12 days did she frown, complain, or ask "why me?" Do you know what she did?

She smiled. She gave lots of hugs and kisses. She consoled those who were sad at her news. She shared memories and gave sage advice. Her final days were spent doing the same thing she had spent most of her life doing . . . sharing herself with those she loved (and a few strangers). It was amazing to watch. Amazing.

So while we miss her terribly, there's really nothing but happy, smiling face memories left here for us. Angels rejoice while friends and family mourn. But in the end, all any of us can see is that smile. That joy.

What an incredible gift.

Thanksgiving's coming!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so I thought I would share some of what we'll be doing in our homeschool to celebrate my favorite holiday. We are beginning Thanksgiving, from Unit Studies by Amanda Bennett in a few days (I just saw a code to get $3 off, if you're interested--FBThanks3). This is a 4-week long unit study that covers everything about this holiday, including Pilgrims and Native Americans with lots of fun project selections. We are excited to get started!

We'll also be creating a Thanksgiving lapbook. Homeschool Share has a FREE lapbook created specifically for Amanda's unit, and it is so beautiful. Instead of using the traditional file folders for the lapbook, we'll make a real book, using this spiral book from Barebooks in the 10x12 size.

I absolutely love the idea of this Tree of Thanks and will try to put something similar together to begin on November 1. Focusing on our blessings is especially important and I love the visual display this tree will bring.

Finally, here's a list of some of our favorite Thanksgiving books. I keep thinking that Ben is going to "outgrow" these books soon, but do we really ever outgrow a great picture book?

Contemplating unschooling . . .

I became aware of the idea of unschooling early on in our homeschool journey. I've never really called us unschoolers because, well, we weren't. Delight-directed seemed to fit us better, lending itself to Ben's interests and passions, while giving me the safety net of some curriculum to work with. The idea of unschooling intrigued me, but I was never able to seriously consider it.

Until recently.

Life has gotten in the way of our daily homeschooling schedule. A Lupus flair for me, and now a diagnosis of cancer for my mom, has left us unsure of where we will be from day to day. A couple of weeks ago, I spent a few days with my mom, while Ben was home with Dad while he worked from home. It was during this week that I began to think about unschooling.

You see, I fully expected that Ben would spend those days playing his Wii, watching TV, and hanging with his friends. I never expect my husband to homeschool Ben when he's working from home . . . it's just too much. I was pleasantly surprised when I came home, to find that Ben had been doing the following:

reading about the plagues in Exodus
watching episodes of Egypt Unwrapped
digging out every book we own on Egypt, pyramids, and pharaohs
talking nonstop about all of the above

All of this without instruction or prompting to do so. He just wanted to learn more about Egypt. Mind you, our history focus this year, if you could call it that, is American history, American wars, in particular. So where did this all come from? It really is not like Ben to just take a subject and go with it without my ~~cajoling~~ suggesting.

And more importantly, is it possible that this could continue, should I allow it? Can I trust that Ben will just learn on his own, without lesson plans, without a schedule, without me even here?

I don't really have an answer to that question yet. The idea of unschooling is just beginning to seep into my brain. But since I know that over the next few weeks, maybe even months, we will be continuing in this way of not always knowing where we'll be, I think we'll give it a try.

TOS Review: e-mealz

Menu planning, couponing, making a budget--it's all so overwhelming. I want to be a good steward of the money God blesses us with and my husband works so hard to make, but I think I'd rather do most anything than figure out how to save money on groceries. In the past, I have found it time-consuming, confusing, and frustrating.

But not any more.

e-mealz makes menu planning so easy by providing a weekly menu plan for 4-6 people, complete with recipes and a grocery list. The budget using the guidelines from e-mealz averages $75 per week. I spend more than that for our family of 3, so I was excited to try e-mealz.

There are more than 20 options from which to choose. You can choose menus based on which store you prefer to shop (Kroger, Aldi, Publix, Ralph's, Wal-Mart), how many people you will be feeding (families or meals for two), or food preferences (vegetarian, gluten-free, low-carb, low-fat, portion-control).

I generally grocery shop at Kroger, so I chose the Regular Meal Plans for Kroger. There is an option for "any store" if you don't have access to one of the store options, but you will miss out on the match-up with the weekly store sales, which I think is one of the huge benefits to e-mealz.

Click here to see a sample of the menu plan and grocery list for the "any store" option. As you can see, it's easy to print out the PDF document to take shopping with you. Everything you'll need to purchase, as well as recipes/instructions, and needed staple items are there at your fingertips.

No one is my family is too picky, so we were all excited to try some new recipes. I wanted to really test the full-effect of using e-mealz, so I printed off the first week, went shopping, and cooked 5 out of 7 meals. These meals included: Cheesy Chicken Bundles with roasted red potatoes and green beans, Lasagna Casserole with mixed vegetables and garlic bread, Spaghetti Carbonara with Caesar salad, Chicken Divan with rice, and Amazing Enchiladas with black beans.

We found all of the meals to be easy to prepare, and most were pretty tasty. We loved the Cheesy Chicken Bundles and Amazing Enchiladas and have actually made them a couple of times since. Ben enjoyed helping me cook and because the recipes are so easy to make, he could really fully participate. For me, easy is always good. I'm often limited in time (aren't we all?) and I lack great cooking skills.

I don't know that e-mealz is something I would use every week. There are just some days/weeks when we want to cook our tried and true favorite meals. But for extra busy weeks, or weeks when we need to tighten the purse strings, it would be beneficial for me to have these guidelines. I probably wouldn't find it as helpful if I lived in an area of the country that doesn't have the listed grocery stores. Having recipes for a family of 4-6 is nice because there was almost always food left over for lunch the next day--another great way to stretch our food budget. If you have a larger family, most of the recipes would double nicely.

At a cost of $1.25, you can't beat the price. Even if you only use it for the recipes, the cost is reasonable! They do charge you $15 for 3 months at a time from your credit or debit card, with automatic renewal. But, you can cancel at any time.

The downside is that you do have to choose ONE plan to follow. You can change to another plan only once during your 3-month subscription. So if you have a gluten-free child, a husband who is eating low-carb, and you're trying to portion control, all while shopping at Kroger, well, you can't have every one of those meal plans. I would love to have been able to switch things around a bit more and try different types of recipes.

Overall, I love the idea of e-mealz. Out of about 6 weeks of meals, I only saw 2 duplicate meals, which is pretty amazing when you think about it. I know at our house, we have some meals we end up eating every week or 2 due to my lack of planning and creativity.

TOS Review: Visual Latin

"Mom, may I please do my Latin lesson now?"

It sounds like a joke or a dream, right? What child in their right mind would ask to do Latin? I can say from my personal experience that pretty much any child using Visual Latin might. Mine did.

Visual Latin is a video Latin program, for ages 9 and up (or any good reader), taught by Dwane Thomas, a funny, personable homeschool dad, who quickly engages students with his obvious love for the language, delightful presence, and awesome sense of humor. Latin is now Ben's favorite subject. Honestly, it's become my favorite subject, too. Even I am learning, and I have caught myself watching the videos when Ben isn't even around. Never in my wildest imagination . . .

We received the first 10 lessons of Latin I in downloadable form. We were able to download the video lessons to our computers and iPod touch. I found this VERY convenient. Even in the car, Ben could watch his Latin lessons. Lessons are also available on DVD if you prefer. Along with the downloads or videos, you will receive PDF worksheets for each lesson. The lessons are short, easy to follow, and of course, can be played again and again if necessary.

Dwane has a way of addressing the viewer in a such a way that you almost feel like you are in his class. He even expects you to answer his questions aloud. That he can't hear you respond doesn't matter, it's just one more way of engaging you in the process.

Visual Latin's process of teaching grammar, followed by teaching sentences and finally reading the language will get your student involved in translation of Latin almost immediately, building confidence and interest in the language. Dwane tosses in a few jokes now and then, and when he makes a mistake (and he does), the camera keeps on rolling, just like a real classroom.

TOS Review: Scruble Cube

We love games at our house . . . especially word games. Since I was a kid, I have loved games like Scrabble and Boggle. Ben is a word kind of kid. He's one of those who has always found the most unusual way of saying things, and he is constantly asking me what words mean. Needless to say, we were thrilled to get to try a new word game.

Scruble Cube is like Scrabble in a hand-held cube, sort of like a Rubik's Cube. If you can spell words as simple as "cat", you can play this game. The cube is moved in the same way as a Rubik's Cube, so that you can twist it around to line letters up, down, and around corners to form words. Each letter is given a number value, so when you create a word, it's easy to add up the score. There are added bonuses such as 2x or 3x word score cubles to boost the challenge. It's as simple as that. Or is it?

Actually, beyond simple 3-letter words, like "cat", Ben and I both found Scruble Cube quite challenging. At first, Ben became easily frustrated with it and refused to play. I just set it aside for a few days and he eventually picked it up again. He still doesn't play with it a lot, but I think he is drawn to the challenge.

Scruble Cube comes with score sheets, an egg-timer and instructions with variations in play. It is recommended for ages 8+, but can be modified for younger kids. It can be played as a solitaire game, or with up to 4 players. Friday Fun School--Week 8

Welcome to Friday Fun School! I apologize for posting a little late this week. Our Friday Fun School took us out of town . . . to Conner Prairie in Fishers, Indiana!

This past week was "homeschool" week at Conner Prairie with a focus on Woodland Indians. Several American Indians (Delaware) from Oklahoma led homeschoolers in 5 different workshops. The children were able to experience the music, dance, storytelling, and history of Woodland Indians in Indiana. We ended the day with a PowWow. We had so much fun and I think we all learned a lot.

Meet Gracie (and please pray for her) . . .

This is Gracie. Isn't she just beautiful? She's just 3 years old and her smile could light up a room. Gracie was born on the 4th of July and she is quite a firecracker--lively and fun and just amazing.

Gracie is my sweet, little friend. Her amazing momma is a very good friend of mine. Gracie has 2 big brothers, a big sister, and a baby brother, and a daddy, of course. They are a precious family. They also happen to homeschool :).

Gracie has struggled with some health issues since she was first born. She has suffered things like bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, and relentless vomiting. Sometimes she just wakes up screaming in the middle of the night, in obvious pain. Then about a year ago, she developed a painful limp. Since then she has suffered several unexplained broken bones in her leg and heel, was diagnosed with a tethered spinal cord, histoplasmosis with several granulomas in her lungs and on her spleen, and a seemingly unrelated mass on her spine that has yet to be identified, because her doctors cannot agree upon when or if she needs surgery to biopsy/remove it.

She has seen countless specialists from orthopedic surgeons to oncologists, neurosurgeons, geneticist, pulmonologists, general surgeons, endocrinologists, infectious diseases, and soon will be seeing a rheumatologist. Diagnoses such as cancer, osteomyelitis, Crohn's disease, osteogenesis imperfecta, juvenile arthritis, celiac disease, chronic granulomatous disease, and Gaucher's disease have been spoken.

Gracie has had brain MRI's, spine MRI's, bone scans, endoscopes, numerous blood tests, HIDA scans, ultrasounds, and will soon have tests of her bladder to determine when her tethered cord should be repaired.

Her many specialists have argued back and forth about whether she should have surgery or not. Second and 3rd and 4th opinions have been sought. Her parents have sought care in another city even, and yet there still is no definitive diagnosis for Gracie, much less a treatment to heal her. She's been on several medications, usually to treat the symptom that is worse at the time, and is now on a very expensive ($1200) medication to treat the histoplasmosis.

You can imagine the toll this has taken on Gracie's family. While Gracie has been brave and strong and tolerant of so much, and her family has remained faithful and trusting of God, it has still been an exhausting, frustrating, sometimes maddening, and often scary time for them. Not to mention the pure agony of watching their baby suffer so.

We all know that God has a special plan for this little angel. She is fearfully and wonderfully made. We know that our God is her sustainer and He is her healer, the Great Physician. So, please join with me in praying for Gracie, not just for answers for her family, but for complete healing. To God be the glory!

Homeschooling with a chronic illness? Slow down!

Homeschool planning and implementation, co-op, field trips, service projects, church, AWANA, soccer, Cub Scouts, playdates, family activities . . . it can all be so overwhelming, even when we're healthy. Add in a chronic illness, and it can become impossible. Who can juggle it all? Not me.

We. must. stop. the. madness.

So you slow down. Maybe this year you skip the co-op, don't return to Cub Scouts, take less field trips. Maybe this year, you just focus on what has to be done. Homeschooling, church. That's all. Is it enough?

I'm here to tell you that not only is it enough, it's a good thing. We're great at making ourselves feel guilty for not doing it all, aren't we? It's crazy. I mean really . . . crazy. We are home with our kids every day. God has blessed us with the desire and ability to homeschool them, disciple them, guide them. Even on the bad days. Every day. And yet somehow we still feel like we aren't enough for them. And our health is suffering for it.

Why do we often overextend ourselves and our kids? Perhaps we're afraid they are "missing" something. Maybe we think we have to make up for sometimes homeschooling in the bed. Or maybe even we are afraid of the "s" word . . . you know the one . . . socialization.

Whatever it is, we need to get over it and realize that our time with our kids is short. Before we know it, we'll blink and they'll be gone.

What do you want to remember? Scouts, ball games, playdates, field trips? Or time together. Snuggle time. Time reading together, cooking together, playing games together. Great talks, leisurely walks, family time.

Or even more importantly, what do you want them to remember? Start there and I'm guessing you'll figure it out. I'm getting there, slowly but surely.

Friday Fun School--Week 7

Welcome back to Friday Fun School! We took a break for a few weeks because we were traveling and had some other personal things step in the way of this fun school day. But we're back and having a blast!

Today, I am in need of a day of rest. I have been recording the History Channel TV show, Modern Marvels, and Ben and I are curled up in my bed watching several episodes of these incredible topics:

Word's Sharpest
Extreme Aircraft
Helicopters
Presidential Movers

We'll also spend some time reading aloud from Swiss Family Robinson and I'll give Ben some computer play time later this afternoon.

It's not our typical Friday Fun School, but it'll sure be fun!

Planning Unit Studies: You can do it yourself!

Over the past few years, I have sort of gotten the reputation as "the unit study" mom in our area. I've even had the privilege of speaking about my passion for unit studies at local homeschool meetings and our state homeschool convention. Last year I helped start a unit study style homeschool co-op at my church.

Most of you probably know that we've been using unit studies off and on (mostly on) since preschool and we love them. I enjoy talking to other homeschool moms about them. I think you could say I'm passionate about unit studies. When I have the opportunity to share about this passion, one of the first questions I get is, "how do you put them together?" I usually respond with, "you don't have to!" And it's true, there are many
resources available for those of you who want a pre-written unit study. Some are free, like Homeschool Share, some are literature-based, like Five in a Row, some are downloadable, like Unit Studies by Amanda Bennett, some are very specific, like the nature unit studies from NaturExplorers.

However, you really can just put together your own unit studies. All you need is a library card and few school supplies. You can have a fun, exciting time, learning about subjects that interest your students, without investing much money at all. Although I have used all of the resources I listed above, I have also put together my own unit studies many times. So, I am going to tell you how you can do it yourself, and I hope you'll give it a try. If you do, please come back to share with me all about it!

5 Easy Steps to Putting Together Your Own Unit Studies

1. Choose a theme. Of course, the first step is to choose the subject your unit study will be about. It can be anything. Are you a geography-loving family, maybe choose a country or state to learn about. If history is your thing, you could choose an event in history or an historical figure to study. Science is also a great area of study. From space to weather, there are so many fun topics in science! Holidays, seasons, animals, airplanes, biomes . . . anything that your students find fascinating will always make for a fun unit study.

2. Gather your materials. The number one thing you need here is your library card. Look for picture books, fiction and nonficition books, chapter books to read aloud, videos, music, anything that your library offers. Give yourself a couple of weeks if you can order your items online so that you have plenty of time for everything to come in. A computer is a great resource as well. Google the word, "kids learn about . . . " and see what you come up with!

3. Plan your unit. Jot down a rough plan of what you wish to do each day. You may want to determine ahead of time how much time you'll spend. Or maybe you'll just run with it for as long as the kids are interested. There is no wrong way to do this. But I feel that I must warn you -- expect some rabbit trails. I'll never forget the year we began learning about horses and ended up on a detour to ancient Egypt. Once you begin a topic, the doors will fly open to all kinds of things to learn about that you probably never thought of. Your kids will want to go there. Be flexible enough to let them. This is when they will really learn!

4. Plan activities to go along. Cooking a new dish is always a hit at my house. We also love jigsaw puzzles, art projects, mapping activities like salt dough maps, science experiments, word searches, and field trips. The possibilities are endless. Be creative. Think outside the box.

5. Record your fun. Lapbooks and notebooks are a great way to keep a record of your unit studies. You could also have your kids record a daily journal, maybe even a blog, of what they did and learned. If you make some awesome creations that can't be easily kept, be sure to take pictures (with your kids in the photo!) and add them to your lapbook or notebook.

Whatever you do, have a blast with it. Ask your kids for ideas. Get messy. Smile and laugh a lot. Have fun. You can do it. I know you can!

Homeschool Family QotW

This week's Homeschool Family Question of the Week is a convicting one for me:

“How do you get everyone up, moving and motivated in the morning?” Our mornings are incredibly ROUGH!"

For me, "everyone" begins with me and ends with Ben. But since we are both night owls, getting up in a timely manner has always been a struggle.

My answer?

I let him sleep until he's ready to get up.

We have routine once he's up, but that routine doesn't begin at a set time. Most days he's up by 9 or 9:30, has breakfast and is ready to begin by 10. Since I'm not a morning person either, I set my alarm for 8:30, so I can have some quiet time before he's awake. Once he's awake, he's ready for the day. Does this mean he's ready to start school right away? Ummm, no. He'd rather watch TV or read.

So this year, we begin our school day with praise and worship time, followed by Bible study/apologetics from Who is God?. This helps us get our hearts set on the right course for the day. Most of the time, the rest of our day goes much smoother. I can tell the difference from the get-go if we skip this part.

Flat Stanley at the Parthenon

In my haste for a blogging break, I almost forgot to share Flat Stanley's trip with Ben and me to the Parthenon at Centennial Park in Nashville. I think this part of Stanley's visit might interest William a little more than Evamarie and Emma!

We learned that the Nashville Parthenon was originally built as a replica of the one in Athens because Nashville was once known as the "Athens of the south" due to it's early emphasis on classical education and it's many wonderful universities. Ben's dad went to Vanderbilt in Nashville, so we totally get that! It was built in 1897 as the centerpiece to Nashville's centennial celebration and now houses Nashville's art museum, as well as a ginormous statue of the Greek goddess, Athena.

Greece is a country in Europe. Can you find it on this map?

Ben and I definitely want to go to Athens and see the original Parthenon, even though it's not in very good shape now. Any excuse to visit Greece, right? Did you read that it's over 2000 years old? Here's a picture of the Parthenon in Athens:

In our study of American History, Ben and I have already used the maps for the original colonies and Lewis & Clark Expedition. One thing I absolutely loved about the Lewis & Clark map was the ability to add in the modern day map underlay. This made it very easy for Ben to see which states were originally apart of the Louisiana Territory! Taking the original colonies map down to outline form helped Ben quickly learn which states were a part of the 13 original colonies, as he labeled them. How cool is that?

As you pour over your curriculum choices, WonderMaps must be on your list. It will be useful for years to come, and while other purchases often seem fleeting, this software program has the lasting power that you always hope for when making a purchase.
