10 Simple Essential Oil Blends for Your Diffuser (with free printable recipes)

Pretty much every day, there is some combination of essential oils diffusing in whichever room I am working or sleeping. The same is for Ben. In fact, we both have our own diffusers, and I have a more personal one that plugs into my laptop.

Which oils we diffuse can depend on a few factors — how we are feeling (is someone sick or having allergy symptoms, do I have another migraine?), the time of year (am I longing for the days when I burned fall candles?), what our goals are (do we need rest or focus?).

When I first began using essential oils, I rarely bought oil blends, preferring the freedom to choose which oils I diffuse from day-to-day. Because of that, I have tried many combinations of blends. The recipes I’m going to share with you today are among our very favorite.

You can use oils from whichever company you prefer to make these essential oil blends. I buy from several companies, but my current favorites include Simply Earth and Rocky Mountain Oils. There are a couple of reasons I love these two companies, but at the top of the list are these three: the quality of the oils is outstanding, their websites are a plethora of information about each oil, how they work, recommendations for dilution and information about 3rd party testing, and the cost is competitive.

In my opinion, less is more when it comes to blending. So most of the recipes only contain 3-4 essential oils. And most contain at least one of the most popular oils on the market — peppermint, lavender, tea tree, and lemon. These are the oils I purchase regularly because I’m always running out. They are popular because they are extremely versatile.

These blends are some I specifically use in my diffuser.  With my diffuser, the oils are mixed with distilled water and then diffused intermittently into the air (diffuse for 30 minutes, shut off for 60 minutes). Be sure to follow the package instructions for yours.

If you have children under the age of 10, be sure to read my post on Using Essential Oils Safely with Children. Not every blend below is created with children in mind, since my only child is 15. Easy substitutions can be made with child-safe oils if necessary.

Allergy Essential Oil Blend for Your DiffuserAllergy and Asthma Blend

This is a commonly recommended blend for spring allergy season for good reason. It works. For many years, both Ben and I took over-the-counter meds for allergies. I also suffered for many years with asthma. I am excited to report that neither of us have used allergy medications and I have not used an inhaler in over 2 years because we diffuse this blend at the the first sign of seasonal allergies.

  • 2 drops Peppermint
  • 2 drops Lavender
  • 2 drops Lemon

Joyful Citrus Essential Oil Blend for Your DiffuserJoyful Citrus Blend

This is my favorite blend because it just smells so fresh and clean. I enjoy it very much. This is my go-to blend on a daily basis if I’m not in need of something to help with a symptom.

  • 1 drop Lemon
  • 1 drop Lime
  • 2 drops Grapefruit
  • 2 drops Tangerine

Sweet Sleep Essential Oil Blend for Your DiffuserSweet Sleep Blend

Do you and someone else in your house have a difficult time winding down and getting to sleep at night? Ben and I both struggle in this area. This is my favorite blend of essential oils for both Ben and me for getting a restful night’s sleep.

  • 2 drops Lavender
  • 2 drops Cedarwood Atlas
  • 2 drops Sandalwood

Relaxing Essential Oils Blend for Your DiffuserRelaxing Blend

Sometimes I just need to rest and relax, but not necessarily sleep. This is my favorite blend for those stressful times when I feel tense. It works well to help Ben chill on those days when his ADHD is in overdrive as well.

  • 1 drop Lavender
  • 1 drop Sweet Marjoram
  • 2 drops Red Mandarin
  • 2 drops Roman Chamomile

Pick Me Up Essential Oil Blend for Your DiffuserPick Me Up Blend

On days I’m feeling sluggish and just unable to wake up, I blend this super simple recipe – it’s the perfect invigorating blend. This is also a great blend to add to a personal inhaler and keep in your pocket for a quick pick-me-up.

  • 3 drops Peppermint
  • 3 drops Orange

  • 1 drop Cinnamon
  • 1 drop Eucalyptus
  • 1 drop Rosemary

If you have Frankincense on hand, go ahead and add a drop of that, too. It’s a pricey oil, so I know not everyone keeps it on hand, but it’s a wonderful addition to this blend.

Precautions

Never use essential oils undiluted, in the eyes or mucous membranes. Do not ingest unless working with a qualified practitioner. Keep essential oils away from children. If applying an essential oil to your skin always perform a small patch test to an insensitive part of the body (after you have properly diluted the oil in an appropriate carrier oil).

Simply Earth Recipe Box

New to essential oils? You don’t have to have 25 bottles of essential oils to get started and you don’t have to buy an expensive “starter kit” through an MLM company to begin using essential oils. There are many essential oils that serve multiple purposes, such as lavender, lemon, and peppermint. Start with some of those.

One of my favorite ways to build an essential oils collection is with the Simply Earth Monthly Recipe Box. For just $39 a month, you’ll receive a box valued at about $150 with 4 bottles of essential oils, 6 recipes with recipe cards, and little extras needed to make the recipes. Each month has a focused “theme” which means you’ll be receiving oils that work well together. They also provide video instructions for each of the videos, and they have a free “Essential Oil Hero Course” where you can learn even more about using essential oils.

With your first box (and every 6 months thereafter) you’ll also receive their Big Bonus ,ox containing carrier oils, coconut oil, beewax, roller bottles, and dropper bottles (a value of over $40) absolutely free. There are no contracts to sign, you can cancel at anytime. And if you use my special code: MARCYFREE with your first box, you will receive a $40 gift certificate to use either with your next month’s box or to purchase anything you wish in their store.

I vetted this company well before I began receiving their monthly boxes. I feel confident that their essential oils are pure, and they supply GC/MS proof on their website. I love their mission to “make your home more natural” and that they back up that mission with teaching you how to do just that.
