Are you a year-round homeschool family or do you take a break from the structure and rigor of the rest of the year to relax and just enjoy the warmer weather? Whether or not you always homeschool in the summer or not, there are creative ways to keep your children learning.
5 Creative Ways to Homeschool in the Summer
Unit Studies
We use unit studies all year round, but for some homeschool families, summer is the perfect time to put away the usual textbooks and enjoy some more relaxed learning. Unit studies are a great way to do that, especially those based on nature walks.
If it’s really hot where you live, stay inside and explore these Unit Studies, with themes from history and geography to science and computers.
Music Lessons
I don’t know about your family, but with ours, it’s often difficult to fit in extra things such as music lessons. If your student is interested in learning an instrument, you can find lessons for guitar, violin, and recorder, along with Music Theory and Voice classes both locally and online.
Take a peek at all of these Music Classes and make some beautiful noise this summer!
Get Creative with Art
If any of your children have been to public school you may have noticed that many schools are doing away with art programs and classes. What a blessing as homeschoolers to have the opportunity to allow our children to be creative and discover their artistic talents.
Learn new techniques, meet artists throughout history and from around the world, and experiment with a variety of mediums such as sculpture, painting, watercolor, and colored pencil with these Art Classes.
Learn Emergency Safety
Do your children know how to respond if they see someone drowning? Can they recognize a potentially dangerous situation with a stranger or do they know what to do should they find themselves in an uncomfortable situation with a stranger? What if someone they are with is bitten by a snake or has a reaction to an insect or spider bite? Would they know what to do? Do they know how they prevent hypothermia, or how to know if someone has it?

Create a Writing Journal
Summer is the perfect time to get the creative writing juices flowing in your children. You can put away the formal writing curriculum, decorate a writing journal and spend just a few minutes a day with a creative writing prompt.
Spend some time looking through these bite-sized Writing Prompts that are full of imagination and creativity. They are sure to spark the same in your students of all ages.
I hope this short list of creative ideas will help you homeschool in the summer and every other season of the year! includes online courses for homeschool moms, attendance record keeping, report card generation, quizzes/test, answer keys, certificates of achievement, and much more.
