I must admit I have been excited all week to bring you this article about AppSchooling Science. Some of our very apps ever are science-related. Both iPad and Kindle Fire have some great products in enrich your student’s scientific studies.
Right off the bat, I’ll tell you that most of these are not free. But if they are here on this list, they are worth the price. It’s not a huge list, but it’s one rich in content.
Apologia Biology Flash Cards — iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch ($4.99) This is a useful app for any study of biology. We are not using Apologia Biology yet, but we love this app! Apologia Biology Flashcards accompanies the Apologia Biology Curriculum to review key vocabulary.There are 16 modules covered. Each module can be selected individually to review vocabulary. The student can also review terminology for the first 8 modules, the last 8 modules, or all 16 modules simultaneously. Quizzes are created randomly.
Frog Dissection — iPad ($3.99) Students can try dissecting a virtual specimen with all the trappings that come with the real procedure-minus the mess of course! Besides a virtual chloroformed specimen, the app comes with all the dissection tools and detailed instructions to complete the procedure. Once dissection is complete, the frog’s organs are exposed for further study. Vivid 3D images will help students visualize the internal organs very effectively. For enhanced learning experience, the app also has information on the different types of frogs, frogs’ life cycle, anatomical comparison of frogs with humans, an interactive quiz and detailed descriptions of the organs.
Rat Dissection — iPad ($3.99) Users can get a feel for dissecting a rat on the iPad without ever inflicting any harm on the animal. The app walks you through a series of steps on how to dissect a rat. All you have to do is to simply follow the written instructions along with voice-over to dissect and explore the rat’s internal organs. Besides a virtual chloroformed specimen, Rat Dissection comes with all the dissection tools. The organs are all presented as 3D images. Users can tap on the individual organs to see what they look like from different angles. Detailed information on the organs is provided to help the student learn about their structure and function.
Cell and Cell Structure — iPad ($3.99) Learn about life’s smallest unit – the cell. Students and teachers will appreciate the detailed 2D and 3D imagery, stunning graphics and in-depth content. Specifically designed for middle-school students, and offering a detailed review for high school students, this biology app is the perfect compliment to the life-science curriculum.

3D Brain — iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch (Free) Use your touch screen to rotate and zoom around 29 interactive structures. Discover how each brain region functions, what happens when it is injured, and how it is involved in mental illness. Each detailed structure comes with information on functions, disorders, brain damage, case studies, and links to modern research.
Skeletal 3D Anatomy — iPad ($0.99) It is a medical application to show the 206 bones in the human body, each category of bones, and every human bone, which separately can be seen in 3D, and manipulated with a finger and rotate in all directions.

Peterson Birds of North America — iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch ($14.99) This one goes on sale. I bought it for $1.99 not too long ago). NASA Now — iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch (free) and Kindle Fire ($0.99) NASA Now aggregates the latest feeds from NASA and presents them in an ordered fashion, and in chronological order. The app includes breaking news from NASA, the image of the day, topical news and hurricane updates, and the latest from their missions, including those from the International Space Station, Chandra X-ray observatory, and the Kepler mission.
Moon Phase Pro — Kindle Fire ($0.99) When you open Moon Phase Pro, you see an image of the current moon, big and beautiful.
