Today, our co-op got together to continue our Autumn Treasures study. Today we learned about apples and Johnny Appleseed. We began by reading a few books and then did an apple taste-test! The kids all loved this and it was very interesting to see which apples they really liked, and which apples they didn’t really care for. Personally, I’ve never met an apple I didn’t like, but I was even surprised on my own preference for certain apples. I like the more tart apples, as did Ben. But a couple of the children (and one mom) really preferred the sweeter apples. The children each had a form to complete, describing the color, smell, and taste of each apple. We had Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Macintosh, Johnagold, Fugi, and Ida Red apples to try. Here are the books we read today…The Apple Pie Tree by Zoe Hall How Do Apples Grow by Betsy Maestro The True Tale of Johnny Appleseed by Margaret Hodges
Did you know that when you cut an apple’s cross-section, the seed pockets are in a star shape? Everyone agreed that was a wonderful gift from God! A couple of years ago, Ben and I did another study on apples and Johnny Appleseed, with a lapbook. You can check it out here, if you’d like . Here are a few pictures of our day today…
