Spring is just around the corner. Can you feel it? But while spring may be in the air, many of us are still spending way more time at home still. And to beat the boredom that may be accompanying all that togetherness, perhaps you’d like to bring some spring indoors and do a fun craft with your kids? Not a crafty mom? That’s okay. This butterflies and flowers paper roll craft is super fun AND simple. I even made some templates for you to make it even easier!
You see, I’m missing the “craft” gene as well. And while I really enjoy making things by hand, it has always been a creative struggle for me. I’ve tried hard to be a crafty mom for many years, and while I’ve managed to successfully make a few crocheted baby blankets, an almost complete scrapbook of my son’s first year, and a Christmas ornament or two, I’m afraid that’s the extent of my craftiness. The gene must skip a generation because my mom was amazing with her creations, and my son is pretty stinkin’ creative as well.
But one day I discovered a miracle. It’s called Pinterest. And with that discovery, I learned there are other not-so-crafty moms out there helping their kids create beautiful masterpieces, mostly from things commonly found in the majority of homeschool rooms.
I also learned that when you present these things to your children, they will create all on their own. They don’t even need a crafty mom (or even templates) to make that happen. So gather a few supplies and see what they come up with. You may end up with a beautiful spring garden of butterflies and flowers to display. To get you . . . I mean them . . . started, here are some simple instructions to begin that spring garden.
How to Make Butterflies and Flowers Paper Roll Crafts for Kids
Here’s what you need to make these butterflies and flowers paper roll crafts:
Paper rolls (you can buy some plain white ones like I did, or just start saving toilet paper rolls – they work just as well)
Colorful paper – construction, color copy paper, origami paper (my favorite)
Colorful Pens or Markers
Scissors
Printable Templates for 2 flowers and 3 butterflies (print on card stock and cut out to use as a template to trace the shapes onto your chosen paper.
Optional items: buttons, pom poms, glitter, and anything else your kids may want to decorate their project with.
Instructions for Butterfly Paper Roll Craft
1. Paint the paper roll the color of your choice and let it dry.
2. For the wings, fold a piece of your paper in half. Trace along the wing template of choice, lining up the part where the dotted line is along the fold of your paper. Your kids may prefer to draw their own wings. If that’s the case, you can use the template as a gauge for how large to draw them. Cut out the wings.
3. Decorate butterfly wings with cut out snips of paper, buttons, pom poms, glitter, etc. They can even just draw a design on the wings!
4. Make the butterfly antennae by bending a pipe cleaner into the shape of a “V” and shaping the ends” into a small “ball.” Alternatively, cut out antennae from your paper. Glue the antennae to the inside top of the paper roll.
5. Glue the googly eyes near the top of the paper roll and draw a mouth with a black pen.
6. Glue the wings to the back of the paper roll, being careful that the bottom part of the wings does not drop below the end of the roll (so that the roll can sit flat on a table).
Instructions for Flower Paper Roll Craft
1. Paint the paper roll the color of your choice and let it dry.
2. For the flower and leaves, trace the templates. Cut out all the parts (flower, center circle, and leaves).
3. Use a pen to dot the center circle, or use glitter to make it sparkle! Glue the circle to the center of the flower
4. Draw “veins” onto the leaves.
5. Glue the flower and leaves to the paper roll.
