My new gallon canister of Green Label, Certified Organic, Virgin Coconut Oil, from Tropical Traditions, arrived via UPS this week. It felt like Christmas morning. I couldn’t wait to open the lid and just take in the smell.
I heart coconut oil.
And coconut oil hearts me.
Yes, coconut oil is saturated fat, and many of us have been duped into believing that saturated fats are bad for our health. But that is simply not true. If you’re like me, you have a bottles of canola oil and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) in your pantry. We have been told for years that these are the best oils for cooking and consuming. Over the past few months, as I have been delving into much research about nutrition, there has been much new information about oils. Specifically which oils are good for us to consume, and which are not. Oils that you should not consume include canola, sunflower, safflower, soybean, “vegetable, and margarine. While I agree that EVOO is a great choice for salad dressing, it is not the best choice for cooking.
Coconut oil is now my oil of choice when I wish to bake, roast, fry or saute. There is a slight coconut flavor , which I don’t mind at all, and most of the time my family cannot even detect. And the smell is heavenly. It’s also great for popping popcorn! The one exception is eggs. I prefer the taste of butter with eggs.
The many benefits of coconut oil include:
- Promoting heart health
- Promoting weight loss
- Supporting the immune system
- Supporting a healthy metabolism
- Supporting the proper functioning of the thyroid gland
- Providing an immediate energy source
- Keeping your skin healthy and youthful looking
I have found that coconut oil is not just good for eating. I use it daily as a moisturizer on my skin, including my face, and as a hair conditioner once a week. I love the way my skin and hair look and feel after applying coconut oil. I also use it to remove eye make-up and when I shave. I truly heart coconut oil.
