Word Study: Delight

Determined, diligent, dutiful, dependable, discerning . . . there were so many words that popped into my mind when I began thinking about this week’s word study.

But then I was reminded of this verse earlier today when a friend needed a bit of encouragement:

The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

It’s one of my top 5 favorite verses in the Bible. And if you’ve been around my blog much, you know that I enjoy the word, delight. In fact, the tagline for this blog for several years was, “the delight-directed homeschool.”

You see where I’m going with this, right? We’re going to take a closer look at the word, delight.

If you’re unsure about what it means to do a word study, or why I do them, take a peek back at A is for Attentive. I explain more there.

delight word study

Today’s word for study is DELIGHT.

According to the Webster’s 1828:

Delight: v.  —  to affect with great pleasure; to give or afford high satisfaction or joy

Delight n. — a high degree of pleasure or satisfaction of mind; joy

Key Word Definitions:

pleasure: the gratification of the senses or mind; the excitement, relish or happiness produced by enjoyment or the expectation of good

satisfaction:  that which pleases

joy: a glorious and trimuphant state; delight of the mind; gayety; mirth; festivity; happiness

great: extensive; wonderful; admirable; of elevated sentiments; magnificent

Delight Defined in My Own Words:

Delight is a state of joy or happiness achieved by the expectation of good. Delight is the satisfaction realized when someone or something is magnificent, wonderful, and admirable.

Biblical References:

The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. (Zephaniah 3:17)

Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. (Psalm 37:4)

But the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace. (Psalm 37:11)

But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. (Psalm 1:2)

My Thoughts:

It is a humbling idea that God delights over me. The first time I read that verse, I remember being surprised at at the thought — He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing. What about me does He delight over? Why would a holy God delight over me, a wretched sinner? And does He really rejoice over me with singing?

It must be grace. And love. And Jesus.

But let’s not stop there. Because most of the verses I found in the Bible that mention delight have more to do with us and what we should delight in.

Delight in the law of the Lord . . .
Delight yourself in the Lord . . .
Delight themselves in abundant peace . . .

Remember, delight is the satisfaction realized when someone or something is magnificent, wonderful, and admirable. We are only these things in the eyes of God because of the work Jesus did on the cross.

But God . . . well He is all of this and more just because of who He is.

Are we living in a such a way to show how much we believe God is magnificent, wonderful, and admirable? Are we praising him daily for these things. Are we living in a state of joy and the expectation of good?

Are we delighting over Him?
