Fall is the season of warm colors and comforting scents. Leaves change and begin to fall in the crisp air, while the scents and flavors of cinnamon, apples, and pumpkin surround us. Even though each new day brings about change, there are certain scents that will always give us a cozy, nostalgic feeling, helping to make our homes warm and inviting as we transition to cooler temps. In my home, I love the comforting aroma of using essential oils for fall.
Blending essential oils at home is one way we can create our own personal comforting space. We can choose which ones we love the most and put them together in various combinations to bring depth, richness, and balance to our home.
These are some of my favorite essential oils for fall with therapeutic properties that can be accessed through aromatherapy. They’re great for diffusing in your home throughout the day or enjoying while relaxing with a warm beverage after dinner as you wind down.
Essential Oils for Fall
Cinnamon essential oil is part of the woody family, so its spicy warmth perfectly compliments autumnal scents. Its sweet, comforting scent is one of the oldest on earth and is known to help relieve digestive and respiratory issues, as well as menstrual and muscle pains. It’s very strong and so should only be used in tiny amounts, but it blends incredibly well with the next best essential oil for fall on this list.
Blood orange essential oil is a delicious deep citrus scent that will make you drool just by smelling it. It’s great for skin care, as it is antioxidant and cleansing while offering stress relief and uplifting the mood. In fact, you’ll find the flowers of blood-orange plants in many bridal bouquets to help calm pre-wedding jitters!
Blood oranges are a variety of orange with red flesh inside, which gives this essential oil its often deep red coloration. So if your diffuser blend doesn’t have a dark hue to it, add some blood orange essential oil and watch it transform from its light color to a deep yellow-orange or even ruby red!
Did you know that there is a coffee essential oil? Yup, you heard that right. Coffee essential oil actually smells just like a freshly brewed pot of strong coffee. Its aroma is so powerful, though, that only one drop is needed to scent an entire room.
Coffee essential oil has been shown to help with mental clarity and alertness while boosting energy levels. It’s also used in skincare for its antioxidant properties and can relieve joint pain when applied topically (just remember to always patch test a small area of your skin for any reactions first!).
This essential oil is a wonderful addition to a natural soap recipe. Use it with comforting scents like vanilla or coconut to awaken the mind while refreshing the skin in your morning shower.
Cedarwood essential oil has an earthy, woodsy fragrance that is slightly astringent and cleansing while promoting relaxation. It’s the perfect essential oil for fall, as it will help you feel more grounded after a busy summer. It helps with respiratory issues which you may have more frequently in the fall months and this wonderful oil will also help to repel insects!
Cedarwood has great anti-aging properties and it too is frequently used in skincare formulations due to these properties and its soothing scent. It’s wonderful when blended with scents of nature like rosemary or clary sage, which are also both good essential oils for fall.
Frankincense essential oil has been highly prized throughout history as a sacred substance used for centuries in religious ceremonies by priests and even royalty. But this versatile ingredient was actually used medicinally by many ancient civilizations to help with a variety of issues, such as skin conditions and respiratory problems. It’s even been shown to be effective in the treatment of arthritis!
Frankincense essential oil has a sweet, rich scent that is beautifully uplifting while remaining grounding at the same time. Its balance between grounding and uplifting makes it perfect for diffusing throughout your home during those inevitable dark days of fall.
Indulge in an aromatherapy session in the comfort of your home using these essential oils! Your olfactory senses will be delighted when using them because there is nothing else like naturally fragranced oils being dispersed into the air! Your home will always smell warm and inviting with these essential oils for fall being gently diffused throughout.
Safety Tips When Using Essential Oils
Many of the oils above are not safe for pets, especially cats, and should not be used around young children. Always check the safety information for your specific oil and oil blends before deciding how to use them in your home.
If using topically, remember that these oils are often too strong to be used on their own and may cause some irritation to the skin. A good rule of thumb is to add a few drops of your favorite essential oils into an ounce or two of carrier oil, such as jojoba oil if using in your skincare routine.

Precautions
Never use essential oils undiluted, in the eyes or mucus membranes. Do not ingest unless working with a qualified practitioner. Keep essential oils away from children. If applying an essential oil to your skin always perform a small patch test to an insensitive part of the body (after you have properly diluted the oil in an appropriate carrier oil).
