Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food. — Hippocrates
Welcome back to my series on juicing for better health. A lot of people don’t realize that fruits and vegetables are the most powerful medicine around. Nothing works better to cure illness, increase vitality, and improve mental clarity than fruits and vegetables. It seems so easy, but your mom and grandma were right. You need to eat your fruits and vegetables – the more the better. God gave them to us for the purpose of good health. But we have replaced them with the seemingly easier solution — prescription and over-the-counter medications.
It’s not surprising to anyone that most people do not get enough fruits and vegetables into their diet. The FDA says that we need at least 7 to 13 cups of fruits and vegetables per day. Sadly, most of us don’t even meet the old FDA guidelines of “five a day.” Some school children can’t even identify fruits and veggies when asked to. And remember, the guidelines suggest “at least” this amount.
Healing Your Body with Fruits and Vegetables
A multitude of studies have revealed that eating more fruits and vegetables as a part of a healthy diet helps protect the body against obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and even cancer. Independent studies such as the one done in the documentary: “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead” have shown time and again that when it comes to fruits and vegetables, more is better.
Studies have shown that you cannot eat too many raw fruits and vegetables, and you cannot get fat from eating them either. Your body needs the phytochemicals, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, and protein found in fruits and vegetables, which are with few exceptions, low in fat and calories.
One book I recommend for you to read about the power of fruits and vegetables, and how the consumption of them is connected to health, is The China Study by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II MD. If you have a bit of “conspiracy theorist” in you, you’ll really enjoy it.
In The China Study, Dr. T. Colin Campbell details the connection between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The report also examines the source of nutritional confusion produced by powerful lobbies, government entities, and opportunistic scientists. The New York Times has recognized the study as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology” and the “most comprehensive large study ever undertaken of the relationship between diet and the risk of developing disease.”
By eating more fruits and vegetables you’ll lose weight, get rid of food cravings, clear up skin issues, think clearer, and even be able to overcome food addictions. More importantly you can literally make yourself heart attack-proof if you follow a mostly plant based diet.
If you continue eating the standard American diet (SAD), you are basically slowly killing yourself. At best, you are compromising the quality of your life. By adding in more fruits and vegetables into your diet, eating more plant based food, whether it’s in the form of fresh juices, or a huge mixed salad, you’ll improve your health exponentially.
People who eat more fruits and veggies get less colds, less flu, less cancer, suffer from fewer allergies, and are often able to think better. When I did my first juice fast two years ago my brain fog went away, my joint and muscle pain greatly reduced, and my fatigue vastly improved. I am thrilled to say that I am on the road to those same results with this juice fast. I am living proof that juicing improves your health and well-being. My only regret is that I did not discover this when I was younger.
So try this — replace all your processed foods and sweet junk foods with fresh fruit and veggies — whether juiced or not — and monitor to see the huge improvement in your health and mental clarity. It might not happen overnight, but most people see a dramatic result within just 14 days. If you find that you cannot eat the recommended 7 to 13 cups of fruit and vegetables a day (and frankly, who can?), then juice them to ensure that you get at least that minimum amount into your body each day. I also bridge the gap with a nutritional supplement called Juice Plus+, since juicing every day is not always feasible for me with my busy schedule and frequent travel.
Let me know how it goes, okay? I care about your health. That’s why I am writing this series.
Be sure to stop back by over the next couple of days when I will be sharing about health and healing benefits of different fruits and veggies. If you are considering juicing for the purpose of healing your body from a particular set of symptoms, you will not want to miss the next couple of articles.
