Teaching Geography is one of my greatest joys in homeschooling. Ben has been obsessed with maps since preschool. We even took a trip once to San Antonio, Texas because he couldn’t stop talking about the Lone Star State after learning all of the states on his USA map placement. We have loved using maps and state guides to develop unit studies.
I believe teaching our children about countries and cultures around the world is very important. And after reading my friend Ami’s helpful blog post about hosting a geography fair, I decided to coordinate one in our local homeschool community.
Today was the much awaited Homeschool Geography Fair. Eight families gathered together to showcase all they learned about their chosen countries. The countries on display included China, Russia, Ukraine, Egypt, Australia, Switzerland, Canada, and Greece. The children really outdid themselves and everyone learned a lot as they did a scavenger hunt through the Fair. Each child received a small gift for completing the scavenger hunt, and afterward a drawing was held for a stuffed panda and Planet Earth DVD set grand prize.
Homeschool Geography Fair Virtual Tour
Ben’s country to learn about and display was China. We had a great time this week learning about China and pandas using Amanda Bennett’s Expedition China unit study, along with the Giant Panda unit study from Homeschool Share. Ben displayed his Expedition China notebook/lapbook and his Giant Panda lapbook on his table, along with a trifold board, bamboo, dominoes, several books, an abacus, and fortune cookies.
Here are some pictures from the day, sort of a Homeschool Geography Fair virtual tour. Of course, most of them will be of Ben’s China display, but I captured some pictures from each country though.
