Ben scored a 36/36 on his math quiz today. Trust me, that is a huge deal! He has hated math since the day we started homeschooling. I think it’s because almost everything comes easy for him, except math. He’s a lot like me….if I can’t do something well, I just don’t do it at all. He’d like to do that with math. Or not do it, I guess.
But 2 weeks ago, we had a chit-chat about math and why it’s so important. Ben has wanted to be a veterinarian, and now a NASA veterinarian for a long, long time. We talked about how math is very important, necessary, mandatory for both careers. Honestly, I hesitated to tell him that for fear that he would give up on his animal rocket science dreams. But instead, and much to my surprise, he chose to adopt a new mantra….”I love math.” He says it every day. Not once, since our little pow-wow, has he complained about doing his math lessons and he has worked so hard at learning new concepts.
Now, does he really suddenly love math? not.at.all. But he is trying so hard to convince himself. And whether or not he ever loves math, he is learning a lot about attitude and hard work. It’s because of his new attitude and a lot of hard work, that he was able to score so well on that quiz today.
Is there a better lesson than that? Hard work and a good attitude will get you where you want to be. Well, maybe there are better lessons. But this one sure makes me a proud momma today.
I could learn a lot from this little guy.
