During my blog hiatus, I am introducing a new series of guest posts — Real Life {While} Homeschooling.

Over the next 4 weeks, I will be introducing you to 9 inspiring friends, who are homeschooling with some kind of real life challenge. I know that you will be as blessed by their stories as I am by knowing them.

Today, please welcome Sam!

Working while homeschooling. It’s something I never dreamed of doing, but here I am doing it! It has brought many changes, and as stressful as this schedule can be, I am formulating a plan to be successful at each role I play.

Our world has really been turned upside down with me working from and away from home. I have been preparing all summer for school, which for us begins in September. This planning normally takes me 1-2 weeks, this was change number one for me!

Here are five key things I am going to be leaning on with this new adventure.

Make a schedule

I used to run our school calendar each day with an iron fist. I felt like a real schoolteacher, but over the years our school became much more relaxed. Our new schedule is going to be much different. We will have to get up earlier by necessity, even though we are major night owls. Certain things will have to be done at certain times, because I have work to do before I leave, and the time clock at my other job doesn’t budge for me.

Stick to the schedule
Taking the time to make a schedule is of no use if I am not going to follow it! I MUST keep an eye on our objectives for the day and the clock. To help with this, I’m going to mute the phone, silence the cell, and block out as many distractions as possible. The most important part of following the schedule is going to be our start time. We have to stick to it!

Take breaks
In the past, I have not been very good about taking breaks. I feel like once one person leaves the classroom, the day is doomed. I’ve also been guilty about getting absorbed in other things when the kids take a break, but I have finally fixed that problem.

I also found this great new resource, The Ultimate Guide to Brain Breaks {not an affiliate link} which covers this exact challenge. I’m learning about the how and why for taking these much needed breaks, plus printables to use when your child gets the urge to take a “brain break”.

Accept help

What if some things about the new schedule don’t click? In the past, I have been really sensitive about accepting help from my husband when it comes to advice. I take his help as a failure on my part, when he is just trying to be objective. Although he isn’t here for school, we talk a lot, and I will take his suggestions as what they really are-help.

Be Flexible

With all of this planning, if something really doesn’t work {we aren’t talking laziness or distraction here} then I will work to find a way. This time with my children is so important, especially now. I want a well-oiled machine, not a boot camp. I want this to be a time of growth a learning for all of us, a time when we all can look back with pride that we somehow made it all work.

I’m Sam, wife to one and mom to six. I love my Lord, my family, organizing and fitness. I’m a homeschooler who takes pictures obsessively. I love sweet tea. You can find me at Sam’s Noggin.
