I’ve recently had 2 big goals in our homeschool. One was to incorporate much more notebooking and the other was to spend the summer studying Kentucky state history.

Imagine my excitement when the opportunity to review Hewitt Homeschooling’s Chronicles of State History Notebook was presented to us!

This lovely notebook, recommended for grades 3-8, comes with 100 pages of high-quality paper, 3-hole punched for placing in a binder notebook that will last for years to come. The notebook is not state-specific, so you may use it for any state you wish to research. Within the pages you’ll find a plethora of notebooking pages, including:
  • Facts, Symbols, Emblems (state flower, tree, flag)
  • Geography, Population (state outline map, natural resources, climate, temperature)
  • Industries, Jobs (industry flow chart, tourism, points of interest)
  • History, Government (famous people, Indian tribes, interviews, religious history, timelines)
  • Field Trips, Photographs (events, newspaper clippings, field trip reports, photo album)
And much more!
While there are many predetermined pages, this notebook leaves much room for your student’s creativity with activities for drawing, writing, creating graphs and maps, making a timeline, recording field trips, and affixing photographs. In the end, you have a lovely scrapbook of information about your state. A treasured keepsake.

You’ll also find a resource list and suggestions for extra projects. The only thing we added were resources to learn more about our state — books, internet links, an atlas and field trips.

In our 6 weeks with Chronicles of State History, we have taken 4 field trips to aid in our study of Kentucky. I love that there are pages for a photo album, and because of the 3-ring binder style, it’s super easy to add more pages of cardstock to increase the size of the photo album. Be sure to use a binder with inside pockets for all of those travel brochures you’ll pick up along the way as well!

I have looked over many resources for recording our state history study, from notebooking pages to lapbooks, and this is by far the best product I’ve seen. It is thorough, easy to use, and contains many pages I haven’t seen elsewhere. Another bonus for many or you — if you have more than one child, you have permission to photocopy the pages for your family, so that each of your students can create their own keepsake.

You can purchase Chronicles of State History from the Hewitt Homeschooling website for $19.95, plus shipping. The Crew has been reviewing several other products as well, so be sure to check out all of the reviews by clicking on the banner below.
