This week, the Blog Cruise is focusing on Summer Camping. Just the words may bring visions of tents, campfires, fishing and s’mores. And that sounds lovely. But it’s not exactly a Crabtree family thing. Honestly, we prefer hotels. With showers. And air conditioning. Call us wimps. I think we’re just plain smart.
But Summer Camps . . . now that’s a topic we can discuss. Ben has attended a few of those. I have found summer camps to be a great way to let him explore an interest for a few days, rather than investing a lot of time and money into something he may not really find as fun as he had imagined.
Most of the time, I find Summer Camps to be a pretty educational time as well, so most school years, our first 5-10 days marked off on the homeschool attendance sheet are Ben’s days at Summer Camps.
Pure genius, right? That’s 10 days of lesson plans I don’t have to write! (not that I ever write lesson plans, but you know what I mean!)
It’s amazing to me how creative folks can be with Summer Camps. I remember when I was a kid, summer camp was either a Girl Scout camp or church camp. There were no opportunities for interest-led camps. Not true for Ben. If he has an interest in something, I can usually find a summer camp to explore that interest.

Martial Arts Camp
This summer, Ben is looking forward to revisiting Horsemanship Camp and adding in a week of Robotics Camp.
I’m looking forward to checking off the first 10 days of 6th grade without lesson planning!
