Last week, while working on his Oceans unit study, Ben asked me a question:
“Mom, can I do day 3, or do I have to do day 2 today?”
He was referring to following this unit study as written, or skipping ahead a day so that he could learn more about Leif Ericsson.
I told him it would be fine to skip ahead.
And someone reading that just gasped.
But when I told him it was fine to jump ahead a day, his response immediately told me I was right:
“I just love what I’m doing. I just love unit studies, they’re so fun!
If you read my blog much, you already know that unit studies are a way of life in our home and homeschool. But I wanted to take one more moment, here at the beginning of the school year for most, and reiterate my passion for this way of learning (and teaching).
It’s not just about fun, though as you can see, fun is important to Ben. It’s not just about being able to skip to another day on the schedule either, though it was an easy way to may my boy happy this particular day.
It is about being flexible, and spontaneous, and teaching subjects that excite your children, topics they find so interesting that they must skip ahead a day to find out more about Leif Ericsson.
So many times I hear statements such as, “my kids just want to hurry up and get school over with for the day,” or “I don’t have time in our curriculum to make our school day more fun.”
It makes me sad.
So please, if you have kids who aren’t excited about their school days, or you really want to add more fun to their days and ignite a passion for learning, give a unit study a try. And if you haven’t an idea where to start, please email me and let me help you. My email button is up there on the right sidebar. I would love to give you some direction.
Happy homeschooling, friends. I hope this is the best year ever!
