During my blog hiatus, I am introducing a new series of guest posts — Real Life {While} Homeschooling.
Over the next 4 weeks, I will be introducing you to 9 inspiring friends, who are homeschooling with some kind of real life challenge. I know that you will be as blessed by their stories as I am by knowing them.
Today, please welcome LaToya!

I have a confession to make, I’m a little crazy. I’m a single homeschooling mom. Oh and my oldest is all over the Autism Spectrum. I never dreamed that I would be in this position. And I don’t mean just the part about being a single mom. No one in my family homeschools. In fact my family is full of public school educators that just don’t understand my choice.

Things get a little crazy when there’s just one parent around trying to do it all: homeschooling, cooking, cleaning, and child rearing. Most of time I fail miserably at one or all of these duties. Oh did I mention that I’m also a grad student? {See I told you, I’m crazy!} I wish that I had a few more of myself to go around. But I don’t.

I often get asked how I manage it all. The truth is I don’t.  Just like any other homeschool mom I struggle to find balance. On my best days I’m just happy that the house is still standing and we haven’t all killed each other.  There are some things that I have learned to do to help me keep what’s left of my sanity.

  • Getting a good night’s rest: It’s something really basic but it’s often overlooked. If I don’t get enough sleep then I’m dragging the next day.
  • Taking breaks often: Flying solo means that I burn out really quickly. I have to force myself to take breaks during the day and during our school year to regroup and refocus
  • Asking for help when I need it: I’m a true control freak so this has been most difficult for me
  • Grace, lots of grace: No one person can do it all. It’s taken me a long time to get to a place where that’s okay for me. Sometmes, like tonight, the dishes just don’t get done.
  • My homeschool doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

There’s a little bit of my story. How to you manage the craziness of your life?

LaToya is a single, homeschooling mom of two bouncing boys. She lives for the quiet moments of the day which are few and far between with two rambunctious young men running around the house. She strives each day to life fully for God and although she often falls short she is determined to stay the course. She wants to encourage women to follow God’s direction for their lives no matter the circumstances. You can keep up with LaToya on her blog, Twitter, Facebook, and Google Plus.
