Washington DC: Dinner at Marrakesh–May 17, 2010

One of our very things to do in Washington DC is eat at Marrakesh, an authentic Moroccan restaurant in Chinatown.  Tom and I have eaten there several times, but this would be Ben’s (and of course, Whitney’s) first experience there.  As we were leaving the hotel, a former co-worker of Tom’s was arriving at the hotel for a meeting.  So Dan came to dinner with as as well.

The menu includes 7 courses.  Every course was delicious.  Even Ben and Whitney enjoyed most all of it.  The decor of Marrakesh is just beautiful, with brightly colored walls, ceilings, and furnishings.  Most every course is eaten with your fingers.  We began by having our hands washed….

Then comes the first course, The 3-Salad Platter:  Cooked Eggplant in Tomato Sauce, Cucumbers and Bell Peppers in Mediterranean Seasoning, and Oasis Carrots in Coriander.  This course is eaten by scooping up the veggies with bread.

The second course is called The B’Stella.  It’s a pie made with chicken and various nuts inside phyllo dough and sprinkled with powdered sugar and cinnamon and is eaten with the fingers.
Course number three is the first Main Course:  Chicken with Lemon and Olives.  This was a whole chicken, similar to a rotisserie-style chicken, with Greek olives and lemon.  This was my personal favorite course.  I didn’t get a picture before it had been pretty much torn apart with our hands, but here it is once we got started.  Ben also found the wishbone!
Next came the 2nd Main Course, and course number 4 overall, Marinated Berber Beef Shish Kabob and Baked Potato.  I think this was the favorite of most everyone else. It was definitely Ben’s favorite.
After this course, we were given hot towels to cleanse our hands.  Ben enjoyed the towel on his face.

Course number five and the third main course was Couscous Grand Atlas topped with Vegetables Chick Peas and Raisins.  This was the only course that allowed utensils…..spoons.  The kids were not as crazy about this course.  I enjoyed the raisins more than the carrots and acorn squash, but overall it was pretty tasty.
As you can imagine, we’re all getting pretty stuffed by now.  So when they brought course number 6, the first of the desserts, we stuffed most of it in our purses for breakfast the next morning.  Ben did eat 2 of the apples though, and we all ate a few walnuts.
The 7th and final course was really yummy.  If truth be told, it was probably our favorite course, but we were all too stuffed to really enjoy it!  Mint tea and Moroccan Pastries.  The pastries looked like Baklava, but had a center that tasted more like brown suger, cinnamon and nuts.
Once dessert was served we had a few minutes to sit and talk before the entertainment began….
The entertainment?  A belly-dancer!  Which of course, the boys really enjoyed!
It was a wonderful evening, lasting about 3 hours. We were all sufficiently stuffed, entertained, and grateful for a lovely evening out.  Our server was a delight and answered all of our questions and curiosities.

If you decide to go to Marrakesh, be aware that reservations need to be made and the tab will run you approximately $30 per person plus taxes and gratuity. It’s worth every penny.
