We are wrapping up our 2 week break (we school for 6 weeks, then take a week or two off). We had a great start to our school year and have enjoyed having a couple of weeks off. We took advantage of our time off and traveled a little with Dada, visiting London, KY. London is a smallish town in eastern KY.
We had a great time in London. Everyone, from the hotel staff to restaurant employees to the local children’s librarian, were so nice to us and really seemed to enjoy Ben. We even made a few friends at the hotel. We met one family who are in the process of moving to KY from Miami and are considering homeschooling. I was able to give the mom some resources and really encourage her as she considers homeschooling. Ben really enjoyed her girls, especially splashing around with them in the hotel pool. Actually, Ben just enjoyed the hotel pool! He swam for at least 3 hours every day we were there, perfecting his underwater somersaults and practicing his dives. He really is quite a little fish!
We also spent some time at the local library. The children’s librarian there was wonderful and had an impromptu sing, story, and craft time with the children that happened to be there. We also visited Levi Jackson State Park. This park commemorates a portion of the Wilderness Road and has an old mill and small replica of a pioneer village. We enjoyed touring there and learning more about our state history.
We took a little visitor with us on our trip to London. Through the Five in a Row message boards, we are a part of a “Flat Stanley” exchange. August was our first month to host a Flat Person. Our little visitor was able to go with us to London, so that added some extra fun to our trip.
On the way back home we stopped off in Berea, KY, one of our favorite places. There is a wonderful dulcimer luthier, Warren May, in Berea. We have enjoyed a lovely relationship with Mr. May for several years now. In addition to traditional KY dulcimers, he also makes beautiful furniture. We have several KY cherry tables in our home, hand-made by this amazing artisan. While we were visiting with him in his store, he gave Ben a quick little dulcimer lesson. I was able to videotape a few minutes of it and also get a still shot. It was a very special moment for us.
Tomorrow we will get back to schooling, starting with a creation/dinosaur unit study written by my sweet friend, Ami, at Homeschool Share. If you haven’t visited her site, you really should, especially if you are a fan of Five in a Row-type unit studies. She has amazing resources and many, many unit studies to choose from, all for free! There’s a link on my sidebar. I’ll update more about our studies as we get going. In the meantime, enjoy our slideshow of the trip to London!
