Ben and I have been learning about snow and snowflakes in our Olympics unit today. Of course, after we learned more about snowflakes we had to make some paper snowflakes. We each made several and most of them are hanging in the kitchen bay window. But we each chose our favorite, glued them to construction paper and hung them up on the wall. Of course, Ben had to have black construction paper so they his snowflake would look like a Snowflake Bentley photo :).

We watched several tutorials on how to cut snowflakes. You’ll find our favorite here.

Some of the books we read today include:

Snowflake Bentley by Jacqueline Briggs Martin

My Brother Loved Snowflakes by Mary Bahr Fritts

The Little Book of Snowflakes by Kenneth Libbrecht

As we were learning about snowflakes, and discussing, in particular, how every snowflake is different, I asked Ben if he could think of anything else in the world, where each is completely different from every other. Thankfully, it didn’t take him more than a few seconds to realize I was looking for the answer, “people!” It was a great time to discuss how God did create us all to be unique, with our own personalities, looks, gifts and talents. This scripture was apart of our copywork earlier in the week, so we got it out and read it again. It’s one of my favorites.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful!” Psalm 139:14.

It’s pretty awesome that this is also true of snowflakes, not just people. God cares so much about his creation that even each snowflake is unique. How wonderful is that?
We’re continuing to learn more about Canada, in particular, “Canada’s Playground, ” also known as British Columbia. Everything looks so beautiful and interesting there, we really wish we could take a field trip to the Olympics!!
Canadian animals are up next!
