In my life this week…

We are slowly getting back into a homeschool routine after taking off the entire month of December. I say slowly because it seems we cannot just go straight to a full schedule any time we’ve had an extended period of time off.

In our homeschool this week…

We began Apologia’s Who Am I curriculum again. We began it as a part of a Schoolhouse Crew Review several months ago, but set it aside while we finished up with Who is God. If you are not familiar with this apologetics curriculum, you can read my reviews on both  Who Am I and the 3rd book in the series, Who Is My Neighbor?

Our current review item is another great product from Apologia — Exploring Creation with Human Anatomy and Physiology. We’re just getting our feet wet, but I will be talking about this a lot in the coming weeks! I ordered a lab kit to go along with it, and we picked up a cool human body model, too. Our first experiment involves mummifying apple slices. I’ll share more next week when it’s finished.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…

Don’t take a month off from homeschooling and expect to jump right back into a normal routine.

I am inspired by…

Ben. He’s an amazing little boy. He has to contend with so much and not everyone understands that. But he tries harder to overcome his shortcomings, and to understand why God created him exactly the way he is, than anyone I know. We read this article together today (so I’m also inspired by Nathan Clarkson) and we both cried. He looked at me and said, “Wow, Mom, Nathan sounds just like me! I AM fearfully and wonderfully made. ”

That you are, precious boy.

Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…

Not we, but me. I am going this weekend on a retreat with my accountability sisters. And I do mean sisters. These girls are the sisters I never had, and I don’t know what I would do without them. We are going to spend 2 days reading Scripture, praying, talking, eating, and maybe sneaking in some alone time to reflect and think about goals for the upcoming year. It will be a time of refreshment. I am giddy with excitement.

My favorite thing this week was…

This is probably going to sound strange. Last night, Ben got very upset that I’m leaving for the weekend. He even begged me not to go. Now, I don’t get my jollies upsetting my boy, but I have to admit that it made my heart smile that he doesn’t like it when I’m gone from him. I will miss him, too.

What’s working/not working for us…

Going to bed too late, and getting up too late is not working for us. Our minds want to shut down from school by 2pm. If we don’t get started until 11 or 12, then it’s just not enough time to get it all done. We’re both night owls and we need to find a way to remedy this.

Questions/thoughts I have…

Why can’t I get to sleep before 3am?

Things I’m working on…

Getting to bed earlier. Do you see a theme here?

I’m reading…

I just finished Love Finds You in Glacier Bay, Alaska by Tricia Goyer and Ocieanna Fleiss. It was so good! With the busyness of the week, I haven’t chosen my next book yet, but I have a couple on my table that I need to read for upcoming reviews — The Tutor’s Daughter and The Delusion. I’ll probably begin one of them while on the retreat this weekend.

I’m cooking…

I am cooking. This week, I baked a chicken for the first time (I usually buy them already baked). It was so good! And we were able to get 2 dinner meals plus lunch for Tom, so it was frugal, too!

I’m grateful for…

A new year, new beginnings, new goals, and  a new word to inspire me all year long.

I’m praying for…

More discipline, better health, a stronger marriage, patience and perseverance with Ben, and friends and family. If you have a prayer need, I would be honored to pray for you, too.

A photo, video, link, or quote to share (silly, serious or both!)…

We gave been horse back riding lessons for Christmas, and he started them this week. This was a new barn for us, but we both loved it there! And of course, Ben fell in love with the horse — Boogie.
