Breaking Free (Beth Moore) Week 3–Truth

Yeah, I know we’re into week 3 and I haven’t blogged much. But I am working hard and learning so much. I just can’t seem to find the time to blog a lot about what I’m learning. Occasionally there is something so profound in the teaching, that I have to stop and share. Tonight is one of those times.

We did some math tonight. The initial equation went something like this:

my truth + satan’s lies = captivity

So what exactly is “my truth.”  Well I’m not going to share everything about my personal truth, but generally speaking, “my truth” is everything about me that is true. The good, the bad, the ugly, The past and the present. Things I’ve done. Things that have been done to me. My body, my marriage, my parenting, my friendships, my jobs, my church, my neighbors, my actions, my inactions, my everything. Everything that is really true.

What are satan’s lies? Mostly what I tell myself about my truth. I don’t deserve this or that because I did …. or said … or thought … or used to be… You can fill in the blanks for your own life. It might look something like this:

“I had an abortion (truth), so something will probably be wrong with my baby if I try to have one (satan’s lie).”
“I was sexually promiscuous as a teenager (truth), so I don’t deserve a good man (satan’s lie).”
“I had an abusive father (truth), so I can never be a good dad (satan’s lie).”

You get the picture.

They’re lies. They’re all lies. The enemy wants us to be mired down in our truth. He uses it to his advantage, so that we remain in bondage, held captive by mistakes we made, or even mistakes other people made that affected us. He gloats about it. He’s thrilled, and proud, and lives for these lies we tell ourselves.

This is not God’s desire for our lives. He wants us to live in complete freedom in Him. For His glory, so that other people see Christ through us. It doesn’t matter what your truth is….

my truth + God’s truth = liberty

Friends, it’s time to break free from satan’s hold on our lives. Let’s begin by getting into the Word and finding out what exactly God’s truth is. It’s hard to recognize the lie, if you don’t know the truth.

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. ~John 8:36

Indeed.
