I am thrilled to introduce you all to a brand new online math curriculum, America’s Math Teacher, brought to you by Math Essentials.  As a member of the TOS Review team, we were given a 60-day subscription.

Your online instructor is Rick Fisher, a 5th and 6th grade math teacher from California.  The website boasts that after learning under Mr. Fisher, 50% of his students bypass 7th grade math and are ready for high level 8th grade algebra.

There are 4 levels of math instruction at America’s Math Teacher:

  • Course 1: Basic Math Skills (for 4th and 5th grade students
  • Course 2: Advanced Math Skills (for middle grade students)
  • Course 3: Pre-Algebra
  • Course 4: Algebra 1

Ben is in the 4th grade, and math is a subject he struggles with, so he partially completed Course 1.  Each course has 4 components:

  • Learning Centers: here you’ll find video instruction that feels much like a one-on-one math tutorial session.  Ben enjoyed these lessons. Concepts were clearly taught in a manner Ben understood.
  • Exercise Center: here you’ll find printable exercises and review problems, and lots of them!
  • Evaluation Center:  pretests, quizzes, and final exams for each course are found here.
  • Resource Center:  here we found several helpful charts and glossaries.

One other fun aspect of this website is the “speed drills” game.  Ben was able to practice his addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts.  Because it’s timed, he had fun trying to beat his best scores.  For a competitive child, like Ben, this was an added bonus for sure!

For $195, your entire family can have access to all levels of America’s Math Teacher.  You can try several  video lessons and print out some of the exercises, at no cost. Whether you have a child who struggles with math, like Ben, or is gifted in math, I believe you’ll find this program beneficial for your students. Be aware though that this is a new program and not all of the glitches have been completely worked out.  I believe they are working diligently at correcting any errors however, and their customer service has been very responsive to all concerns.
