A couple of years ago I received a product from Koru Naturals to use and review. They actually offered several products, but I chose Emu Oil and Blue Tansy Oil Cream because I had previously had a great response to using their plain emu oil for my joint pain (due to Lupus). I had an even greater response to the new cream and began to research just what was in it that was helping me the most. Because the name of the product included “blue tansy oil” I started there.
I quickly discovered two things:
- Blue Tansy essential oil is amazing.
- Blue Tansy essential oil is not easy to come by.
In fact for the past year, it’s been unavailable from all of the major essential oil sellers. Until recently. And since it’s now available, I thought I would share some of the properties I’ve learned about this special essential oil.
Health Benefits of Blue Tansy Essential Oil
In the sixteenth century Britain it was considered to be necessary for a garden to grow Blue Tansy (Tanacetum annuum). Blue Tansy is often confused with common Tansy (Tanacetum vulgare) but the former produces an essential oil that is completely different chemically. Blue Tansy contains high amounts of chamazulene making the oil dark blue in color. Tansy Oil is toxic and should never be used for aromatherapy purposes. The distinction is very important and should be noted while shopping for essential oils.
The major chemical components of Blue Tansy essential oil are: monoterpenes (49%), sesquiterpenes (36%), alcohols (8%), ketones (5%) oxides (2%). This essential oil has anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine, anti-fungal, analgesic and sedative properties. It is also wonderful for skin care.
Anti-inflammatory/Analgesic
Blue Tansy essential oil can be used to reduce inflammation and ease the pain of sore muscles and joints. Whether you suffer from the chronic joint pain of arthritis, or your muscles are aching because of a hard workout, a massage or a soak in a Blue Tansy bath can bring relief.
Anti-histamine
Blue Tansy essential oil has natural anti-histamine properties, which is great news for those who are affected by seasonal allergies. Blue Tansy reduces the body’s natural histamine response to allergens, thus relieving many of the familiar symptoms such as sneezing, rashes, and watery eyes.
Sedative
Blue Tansy essential oil has a warm, herbaceous aroma that can put your mind at ease, induce relaxation, and help with emotional issues such as anxiety, stress and mild depression.
Anti-microbial
Blue tansy essential oil has both antibacterial and anti-fungal properties, making it ideal for treating minor scrapes, cuts, burns, or insect bites. Blue tansy is also anti-fungal and therefore can be used to help treat fungal infections of the skin, nails, or scalp.
Skin Care
Blue Tansy essential oil helps to reduce redness and fight blemishes with its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps moisturize and soothe dry, flaky, and irritated skin while improving skin’s overall appearance, including mild bruising.
