Faster, Higher, Stronger.
It’s the Olympic Motto. And a lesson for life, straight from the Word of God.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race.” 2Timothy 4:7
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.” Micah 4:2
“Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the Lord! Psalm 31:24
Today in our Olympics study, we learned about Jesse Owens, who won 4 gold medals in track and field during the 1936 games in Berlin, during Hitler’s reign. Can you imagine being a black athlete in Nazi Germany? Here’s Hitler, excited to bring the Olympics to Germany so that he can prove his Arayan race is superior, and along comes a poor black man from America to make him eat his words…..with a side of gold medals, thank you very much.
We read A Picture Book of Jesse Owens, a nice little book to give you some background into his life and accomplishments. We actually really enjoy this entire “A Picture Book of…..” series of books. We’re also working on pieces for our lapbook and looking all around the web at the plethera of information about the Olympics and it’s athletes. Fun stuff.
We found one website that listed several Jesse Owens quotes. Ben chose his favorite, so I’ll leave you with those words:
“Find the good. It’s all around you. Find it, showcase it and you’ll start beleiving it.” ~Jesse Owens.
