Every since we visited The Kentucky Horse Park, Ben has become horse crazy. He already aspires to be a veterinarian when he grows up, and love animals in general. But this obsession with horses is new. So for our next unit study, he has chosen Amanda Bennett’s unit study on Horses. We just finished our first week, where we spent a lot of time in ancient civilizations. One of Ben’s favorite stories was that of Alexander the Great and his horse, Bucephalus. But ancient Egypt and the Trojan War were fun as well!
Over the course of the next few weeks, we will continue to learn more about Horses (and their people) in history, horse anatomy, breeds of horses, and caring for horses. Here are a few of the books we’ll be using:
Fritz and the Beautiful Horses by Jan Brett (HSS unit study available here)
Mrs. Mack by Patricia Polacco (HSS unit study available here)
The Finest Horse in Town by Jacqueline Briggs Martin (FIAR vol. 3 with HSS resources)
My First Horse and Pony Care Book by Judith Draper
The Horse Breeds Poster Book by Bob Langrish
The Kingfisher Illustrated Horse and Pony Encyclopedia by Sandy Ransford
The Kids’ Horse Book by Sylvia Funston
Our read aloud for this week is the classic, Black Beauty by Anna Sewell.
We’ll do some art with 1-2-3Draw Horses by Freddie Levin and look at horse artwork here.
With the holidays coming and things being just generally busy around here, I don’t think we’ll lapbook or notebook this unit. Most of it will just be done conversationally, much of it Ben will do independently. He loves horses so much though, I know he will learn a lot!
