Update: Please note that since this article was first published in 2018, ST has raised it’s yearly membership to a little over $200/year. However, they often have special sales that bring it way under $200.
As a homeschool mom who has spent far too much homeschooling my ONE child, I’m often blown away by how much many of you spend to homeschooling 4, 5, 6, or more children! I see so many of you combing Facebook groups and Pinterest for FREE homeschool helps, loading up your kids to check out 100s of books from the library, posting in Facebook groups asking for the best places to buy used curriculum. It’s exhausting trying to be a frugal homeschool mom. I know. I’ve been there. I am there. So it may excite you to learn how to homeschool ALL of your children well for under $200/year with SchoolhouseTeachers.com.
Our family joined SchoolhouseTeachers.com the first month it existed. There were 9 teachers at that time, and Ben’s first class was a geography class using Google Earth. He LOVED that class and begged every day to go to the library where he could use the computers with the BIG screens to virtually visit Paris, London, South Africa, China, Mexico and more.
Today, that little site with 9 teachers now has over 400 classes for PreK thru high school and has become our go-to for high school electives and delight-directed learning. I addition to that fun Google Earth class (that is unfortunately no longer available, we have used classes from SchoolhouseTeachers.com to prepare Ben for high school, brush up on his math skills, get started playing guitar, and to help him learn how computers work.
This is why it shocks me at how many people skip over my seemingly constant praise of SchoolhouseTeachers.com with little more than a cursory glance. It has so much to offer for such a low cost.
This membership is what I frequently tag as “the best deal in homeschooling” for one reason and one reason only. It’s the truth. At the normal price of $179/year, you can homeschool your whole family.
But every time I post on Facebook or send an email sharing about all of the options offered and why we love it so much at SchoolhouseTeachers.com, I get an email back from at least one person expressing how overwhelmed they are by the options. So let me help you by giving you a few more tips.
How to Homeschool ALL Your Kids for (little more than) $200/year
First of all, keep in mind, you don’t have to buy any textbooks, there are NO per-child fees, and there are NO limits on how many courses you can take. As a matter of fact, there are NO added costs anywhere.
Secondly, let’s clear up the cost issue, because this is one of the most important features of SchoolhouseTeachers.com and it bears repeating. Whether you have one child or twenty, you will pay just one membership fee for everything for everyone.
With 400 courses to choose from, it really can seem overwhelming, but they have made navigating the site super simple. You can either search for classes by subject or grade level (or both). What I do is choose the subject I need a class for, and then scroll down to the bottom and click on the grade level I desire. This will show me every class for my chosen subject at the grade level I need.
I would suggest letting your children pick their courses right alongside you—they can take as many as they want.
