I wanted to share some pictures of a few of our Olympics preparations. These were all super easy to do and really add to the fun and excitement of the Olympic Games! I used our family room mantle to display everything. We happen to have some hooks for Christmas stockings that worked out well for attaching the flag and medals chart.
Here is the overall look. Ben loves it.
This is our flag. We made it using a terry cloth hand towel and puff paint. I drew the circles on first using a pencil and plastic lid. Then Ben painted the circles. I did the lettering, but if you have an older child, with neat handwriting and a steady hand, she could probably do that. My 9 yr. old boy….not so much 😉
This is our torch. Another super easy craft. Just roll a piece of white construction paper (I used 12×18) into the torch shape and tape to hold. The “flames” are made with red and yellow tissue paper. Just lay 6 pieces of the paper, alternating colors, down flat, gather in the center and push down into the torch. I placed some double-sided tape on the top of the inside to hold the paper in place. You can decorate the torch anyway you wish. We just printed out the symbol, glued it onto some red paper, then glued that to the torch.
The is our Olympic medal tote board. We are studying about 12 different countries in our Olympic Unit Study, so those are the countries we will follow during the Olympics. We have stars to place for each medal won….gold, silver, and red (for bronze). Our plan is to update daily.
Here is a close-up of the medal board. We decorated with flag stickers, and we also wrote in the names of the countries as well as the abbreviations used, to make it easier to follow. Some of those abbreviations can be tricky!
Tonight, we’re making our Olympic rings pizza for dinner. I’ll post a picture of that later.
