Do you have a heart for foreign missions? I do, and the ability to support those called to pack up their families and move far away from everything and everyone they know simply amazes me. Whether you support missions financially, prayerfully, or by serving yourself, it is important that as Christians, we are all involved in some way with sharing the gospel of Christ around the world.
Ben is almost old enough that he and I can begin taking short term missions trips to far away lands ourselves, a dream I’ve had for a very long time. Until we are able to do so, learning about missionaries and providing as much financial and prayerful support is something integral to our homeschool and family life.
We have used several resources over the past few years to learn about missionaries, unreached people groups, and the countries where missionaries serve. Today, I am going to share a few of our favorites.
Voice of the Martyrs
We have subscribed to the free VOM newsletter for several years. This monthly publication shares the testimonies of missionaries, teaches you how to pray effectively for them and shares ways for how to get involved.
They also offer a free book — Tortured for Christ by Richard Wurmbrand, founder of Voice of the Martyrs
Their Kids of Courage website is full of child-friendly information for your younger or more sensitive kids.

YWAM Publishing
YWAM Publishing is an arm of Youth with a Mission (YWAM), a volunteer organization of Christians dedicated to spreading the gospel around the world.
Our favorite books about missionaries and other Christian heroes are published by YWAM. Some of them even have unit studies to go along.
Heaven’s Heroes: Real Life Stories from Histories Greatest Missionaries by David Shibley –Real life stories of history’s greatest missionaries from the eighteenth century to the present day. The author honors almost two dozen men and women who have met danger, frustration, and personal grief with a joyful heart.
Window on the World: When We Pray, God Works by Daphne Spraggett and Jill Johnstone — We have read and loved this book to the point it is starting to fall apart. It is beautifully illustrated and contains an A to Z guide of countries and people groups with descriptions of life for these precious people. It guides you in how to pray for each group specifically as well.
Children Just Like Me: A Unique Celebration of Children Around the World by Anabel and Barnabus Kindersley. This is another favorite book from our homeschool library. This books introduces your children to a children from around the world, sharing their daily lives, native foods and dress, how they are educated and more. A great book to help your kids connect with kids around the world, who really are not that much different from them.
ullins is a lovely literature-based unit study curriculum for homeschoolers. It gives a nice tour of different countries of the world, which adds to our missionary studies.
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,Matthew 28:19e homeschooled children.
