Ben is a busy guy. We’re constantly on the go — between sports, church activities, homeschool field trips, and the such, it seems we spend more time carschooling than homeschooling. While it is easy to just hit the drive-thru on our busiest days, I really don’t want to fill him up on fast food all the time. So, how do I feed him healthy snacks on the go and on a dime?
I prepare a snack box for Ben to carry in his backpack. This snack box will have a variety of healthy, protein-rich foods as well as a few “sweet treats” in it. These snacks are typically enough to last him from one meal to the next – and sometimes that can be a long time depending upon his schedule for the day. If I know the day is going to be exceptionally long, I’ll actually pack snacks in larger baggies to refill our snack box throughout the day.
Our box is a small double-sided tackle box {found in the fishing section at Walmart}. I bought this specific box, because it will fit in my purse if Ben doesn’t have his backpack with him. I also like that this has removable dividers so I can adjust it based on the snacks we have on hand. You could also use bigger divided boxes from the craft section like the ones that hold my beads.
Some of his favorite snacks include:
- goldfish crackers
- cheez-its
- nuts
- trail mix
- fruit snacks
- sliced cheese sticks or Babybel cheese
- grapes and/or blueberries
- mini-cookies
- granola
- mini-marshmallows
- pretzels
- sunflower seeds
- mini-muffins
- small cereals like mini-wheats, cheerios, frosted flakes, etc.
- M&M’s or other small candies for a little treat
- raisins, craisins, or other dried fruits
- beef jerky (his personal favorite)
We also pack some snacks that don’t fit in our snack box. These kinds of snacks may include:
- squeeze applesauce
- gatorade
- water bottles
Since I started preparing these snack boxes for Ben, I have also used them on road trips, plane rides, and day-trips to the zoo or amusement park. My friends have started packing them for their children. They would work well for days at the ballpark or soccer fields, too.
Do you pack snacks for your kids when on the go? What do you include?
