Last week, I wrote about grief. I was having a really tough week grieving for my mom in anticipation of today, what would have been her 71st earthly happy birthday, and instead is her first heavenly happy birthday.
I wish I knew more about what happens in heaven.
I’m guessing there probably aren’t birthday parties for earthly birthdays. And try as we did, Ben and I didn’t get a chance to have the earthly celebration at Olive Garden (for her very favorite eggplant parmigiana and tiramisu) for mom today that we had hoped for. An earthly relative, my husband’s nearly 90 year-old aunt needed our love and attention today, and I know mom would understand.
Anyway, about heaven.
Since I’m pretty sure Mom didn’t have a birthday party today, I spent some time pondering what she might have been doing instead.
So come on along and join me in a little visit to Mom’s heavenly happy birthday . . .

See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that in heaven their angels always see the face of my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 18:10)

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away. (Revelation 21:4)

In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.  You know the way to the place where I am going. (John 14:2-4)

But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But, as it is written,”What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him. (1 Corinthians 2:7-9

Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8)

At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. (Matthew 22:30)

Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.  No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever. (Revelation 22:1-5)

Amazing, huh?

No darkness because He is her light — brighter than 71 birthday candles!

No tears, mourning, crying, or death! (boy, do I look forward to that myself!)

With Jesus — what a gift!

Like angels — I don’t know what that means, but it has to be pretty cool.

Fruit (she loves fruit — I hope they had pineapple)!

Unimaginable!

Seeing the face of God!

And then there’s the part where she wouldn’t want to come back, even if she could. I know that’s true!

Enjoy your birthday, Mom.  I’m guessing this is better than Olive Garden and I’m so happy for you.
But we still love and miss you every day.
