Homemade Quilted Christmas Ornaments Tutorial

Many years ago, before marriage and Ben, I was a home health care RN. One day, close to Christmas, I visited a pregnant patient who needed some education in how to manage her diabetes.

When I arrived, I found her making handmade, quilted Christmas ornaments. I immediately fell in love and really just gushed over her sweet project. She was kind enough to show me how she made them and to send me home with one of my very own. I was so excited,  because no sewing was required (I do NOT sew)!

How to make homemade quilted Christmas ornaments - no sewing required. These beautiful ornaments make wonderful gifts for friends and family. Make them with your tweens and teens for loads of family fun! #nosewcrafts #quiltedprojects #christmasornaments #DIYchristmas #DIYornaments #Christmascrafts

I made probably 25 of those ornaments that year. I gave some to friends and kept the rest to decorate my own tree. These beauties remain my very favorite ornaments today.

For this blog post, my intention was to try to do a tutorial with instructions and pictures, but then it occurred to me that perhaps someone already had. I was so thrilled to find this awesome YouTube video. She makes the ornaments exactly the same way I do, and I could not have made a better video. So I’m just going to share it with you today.

Just to reiterate what you need for this project:
3 inch styrofoam ball
material in 3 different patterns — 8 pieces of one and 16 pieces of the other 2, cut in 2.5-inch squares
tons of straight pins (each ornament requires 200)
decorative ribbon
hot glue gun or extra straight pins

You’ll also need something to hang the ornment with — I use  thin ribbon and hot glue or pin it underneath the ribbon edging. I also use a pretty straight pin with a pearl to do just the center on both sides.

If you’re like me and you’re not a quilter and don’t sew, you may need to purchase a rotary cutter, board, and ruler. I purchased this 3-piece Rotary Cutting Set and it works wonderfully for this project.

This project is easy enough to do with your kids, 10 and older. In my experience smaller patterns in the fabric and making sure to work with fabrics that match but contrast works really well, but be creative and have fun with choosing your material!
