N is for Nurse Crabtree

Ben would tell you that I “used to be a nurse.” He would technically be correct, but it’s hard to think of myself as a nurse in the past tense. After all, it took years of blood, sweat, and tears to earn the title of Nurse Crabtree (no, my patients did not call me that, but some of my adorable friends did and still do).
A little more than three years ago, I traded the “nurse” title for the “full-time, stay at home, homeschooling mommy” title.
There are no regrets, but now and then my heart longs for my nurse days. You see, I had the honor and blessing of being a labor and delivery nurse. Aside from wife and mom, it is the title I am most proud of. I often refer to this time in life as my “first ministry.” There is little more honoring than being one of the few people present in the room when the miracle of a new life unfolds. And I was given many opportunities to minister to families in those 15 years I was Nurse Crabtree.
I miss it.
So, when a sweet friend recently asked if I would come assist with her delivery as her “doula,” I was very excited. This would be my friend’s 9th baby, but her first experience with someone besides her husband in the delivery room with her. She desired a natural onset of labor, and a delivery with little intervention. This would be different than her past deliveries, where words like “induction,” “pitocin,” and even “C-section” had been the norm.
We began praying for her dream of a delivery early on. And last Thursday night, the dream became reality. I was there to watch as my friend experienced one of the most beautiful labor and deliveries I’ve been privileged to attend. It was the perfect answer to our prayers. And since I brought a camera, I have a few pictures to share with you today.

Welcome to the world, beautiful Adelae Joy. You are deeply loved.
