Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House series of books is a staple in many families and homeschools. Many of us have grown up reading these books, and enjoy sharing these stories of American pioneer living from the 1800s with our children. Along with these books, the television shows based on them have also been a staple in our family for years.
Dean Butler brought the story of Almanzo Wilder to life in the television series and now brings to life a documentary based on Farmer Boy, the second book in the Little House series.
In Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura, from Legacy Documentaries, we learn about a critical year in the early life of Almanzo Wilder.
Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura
Produced in partnership with the Almanzo and Laura Ingalls Wilder Association in Burke, NY, this engaging documentary showcases a period in Almanzo’s childhood through original footage and re-creations shot on location at the Wilder Homestead in Burke, NY, as well as images and text excerpts from Farmer Boy.

Perfect for the entire family, Dean Butler spends about an hour telling the story of Almanzo’s family heritage, inspiring family life, and his personal trek into manhood. It gives glimpses into what life in America was like in the mid-1800s for the vast majority of families, who farmed the land, explored new frontiers, valued hard work, and understood the meaning of self-preservation.

The DVD is well-made and would be a pleasant and useful addition to any American history curriculum or a fun edition to family movie night.

Almanzo Wilder: Life with Laura can be purchased for $21.95 from the Legacy Documentaries website.
