Strawberry-Banana Breakfast Smoothie Bowl
Please share!
Strawberry and banana is a classic flavor combination that’s like a throwback to the old school Dannon yogurt. This pair just seems to go together perfectly. The fruity combo is a cascade of tastes that provides a flawless balance of tart and sweet.
This smoothie bowl recipe lets you get that same delicious taste without the dairy or the wallop of added processed sugars (some store-bought flavored yogurts have as much processed sugar as a soda!) When you make your own at home, you can be certain that you’re using simple, natural whole-foods without the additives.
Strawberry-Banana Breakfast Smoothie Bowl
This strawberry-banana breakfast smoothie is an excellent way to start your morning not only because it comes together quickly and uses wholesome, nutritious ingredients, but also because it can be customized to meet your tastes and use whatever ingredients you have on hand.
If you are looking for some added protein, try topping it with a dollop of peanut butter. The creamy texture and savory taste will be a great mix to the frosty smoothie. Adding some raw oats as topping gives it a satisfying crunch and fills you up. Flaked coconut is also a delicious addition that packs some extra flavor and texture.
This recipe starts with frozen bananas and strawberries as a base. This not only gives it a delicious and creamy texture, but it means that you can stock up and keep the ingredients on hand and not worry about using up your fruit before it goes bad.
If you have fresh fruit rather than frozen, you can either slice them up and freeze them the night before for a creamier texture or use them as-is. If using fresh fruit without freezing, the final product won’t be as thick, but it will be just as delicious!
For the liquid, you can use soy, almond, or cashew milk. Be sure to choose an unsweetened variety. The fruit will definitely be plenty sweet on its own.
If you find yourself rushing in the morning, this an excellent way to make sure you get a healthy breakfast without having to sacrifice a lot of your precious morning time. You can even measure out the ingredients and set the blender up the night before, making breakfast take a matter of minutes.
This recipe is an excellent way to get a serving of fruits, whole grains, and healthy fats . . . all in the time
it takes to dump the ingredients in the blender and hit the button!
Tips Before Making Your Smoothie Bowl
In the photos, I’ve used all frozen ingredients and very little liquid to make this smoothie bowl as thick as possible. If you want to do the same, it helps to have a blender that can handle frozen ingredients. It works best if you have one with a tamper, as is demonstrated in this chocolate cherry ice cream video. But it’s not 100% necessary to do it this way. Here are a few tips to get it done with a blender that’s less powerful:
Let the strawberries and bananas thaw out a bit or use non-frozen from the start. The smoothie bowl will be less thick, but still good enough to eat with a spoon.
Use more liquid (soy milk or any plant-based milk) to give the blender more leverage to create a vortex and pull the ingredients toward the blades.
Cut the frozen bananas and strawberries into smaller pieces before starting.
If you have a smaller blender like one of the smaller Ninja models, you can blend the ingredients and then stop to readjust them. This gives you the best chance of creating a vortex without a tamper.
Another recommendation I have is to add the peanut butter on top of the smoothie bowl rather than blending it. This will allow you to get a bit of peanut flavor and richness with each bite – kind of like a peanut butter swirl ice cream.
Smoothie Bowl Ingredients
1 frozen banana
1 cup of frozen strawberries
1 cup of unsweetened plant-based milk (soy, cashew, coconut, or almond)
¼ cup coconut flakes for garnishing
1 scoop of natural nut butter (peanut, almond, or cashew)
¼ cup of raw oats for topping
Smoothie Bowl Directions
Add all frozen ingredients and milk to blender and blend.
Feel free to add more milk or adjust between blending cycles if you’re not getting a good
vortex. Follow above tips if you’re having issues.
Top with coconut flakes, nut butter, and raw oats.
