Ben loves to read the Bible. Actually he loves for me to read the Bible to him. Over the past few years, we have tried a few different Bible studies geared toward kids. Most of the time, there is a passage to read, a verse to memorize, and a life application or modern-day story to compare. Most are more of a devotional, rather than true Bible study.
Karen Mohs, of Greek-n-Stuff, has developed several Bible studies that take a book from the Bible and study it verse by verse. We were blessed to use I Can Study Esther from this Alone with God line.
With this study, the book of Esther is broken down into 13 weekly lessons. Each lesson focuses on one passage and includes a memory/recitation verse, 2-4 questions per day about the verses, and interesting tidbits of information. Each day, Monday through Saturday, the child is encouraged to begin with prayer and recitation of the memory verse, and the week ends with a “think and pray about it” section with thought-provoking life application encouragement.
I appreciated that this is a verse-by-verse Bible “study” rather than a devotional. Ben appreciated that it was short and sweet. He was able to finish his study each morning in about 10 minutes. For an active, busy, distractable 10-year-old boy, this was perfect. But make no mistake, the information was pertinent and interesting to him.
As a mom, I desire to encourage a love of studying the Bible in my son, as in myself. The Alone with God studies are a great way to begin that for your middle elementary-aged children.
The studies available now include:
Esther
Jonah and Ruth
