We love games. It doesn’t matter how educational they are, we love them. But when we can find a game that is educational, fun, easy to understand, and compact . . . all the better. This is exactly what we found with Civilize This! from Griddly Games.
We received the travel version of this game of historical trivia. It can also be used as an expansion set for the original Wise Alec Trivia Game. All you need is a paper and pencil to keep score and you’re off. A quick roll of the die. designed with different-colored dots, will let you know which period of history your trivia question will come from–Ancient, Medieval, or Modern. Or, if you’re lucky enough to get purple, you get to draw a Wise Alec card, where instead of answering a trivia question, you might get a tongue twister or brain teaser. Ben loves getting the purple cards! Once you know which color you have, then a card is drawn and a question is asked by your opponent.
On the card is a choice of two questions, one worth 3 points, the other worth 7 points. Choose which question you wish have, answer the question correctly, and receive your points. Now it’s the next player’s turn. You can choose a point or time limit to determine when the game ends. If you’re playing with multiple ages, you might determine that older kids and adults must answer the 7-pointers, while younger kids answer the 3-pointers. That way, the whole family can play fairly. Suggested ages are 8 and up, 2-6 players can play. We always love games where just two people can play!
Ben and I have enjoyed using Civilize This! for our Friday Fun School history lessons. It has provided a great review of previously studied periods and taught us both things we didn’t know before. I call that a double blessing! The questions can be very challenging. There were many neither of us knew, even for periods of history we thought we knew a lot about.
I can imagine we’ll continue playing this game over the next few years as we add to our history knowledge. We are also anxious to try the other trivia expansion sets, as well as the original game. These games can be played with friends, family, at parties . . . anywhere, with anyone. But they do make for great fun for homeschool!
Additional travel games/expansion sets include: Nature Nuts and Sports Buffs.
The cost of the original Wise Alec Trivia Game is $24.99 and it can be purchased from several retail outlets. The travel/expansion sets, including Civilize This! can be purchased for $14.99.
