Child Training Bible

If you’re anything like me, you’re usually scrambling for just the right scripture to share with your kids when they have done something that requires admonishing.

While I wish I had more scripture hidden in my heart — book, chapter and verse– I just don’t always have exactly the right verse on the tip of my tongue.

But I love being able to point Ben to scripture for training in righteousness. And yes, I am willing to admit, I sometimes just “Google” it.

Child Training Bible CoverSo, I was thrilled to discover the Child Training Bible (CTB), and when I was asked to review it , I jumped at the chance!

From their website:

“This Bible is designed for parents and children to seek answers from God’s Word on common sinful problems. Topics include: disobedience, selfishness, anger, complaining and fear. The Child Training Bible makes it easy for parents to bring the truth of God’s Word into times of instruction. Simply use the key on the inside-front cover of the CTB to locate the sinful behavior and find the section and color flags to go to. Read the highlighted verses with your child and explain what God says about the behavior that needs to be addressed. With the CTB you can make the most of your time with your children by using Scripture to instruct them in righteousness”

For $9, you will receive a kit that includes:
  • 1 Child Training Bible Key
  • 3 Scripture Tabbing Charts (double-sided)
  • Set of Instructions
Both the CTB Bible Key and Tabbing Charts are made from heavy cardstock and well-laminated for durability.

You will need to purchase/supply a 9×6-sized Bible, highlighters and Post-It flags. I ordered mine from Amazon.com.

Basically, you will go through both the Old and New Testaments, highlighting scripture and placing a post-it flag on the page, to make referring back to it simple. Everything is color-coded for easy reference. The Child Training Bible Key gets affixed to the front of the Bible to use as a guide. Since everything is color-coded, you can easily find the verses you need, based on character trait, by using this guide.

The Scripture Tabbing Charts have a guide for placing the post-it flags on one side and ideas for how to use the scripture on the other side. You’ll tuck these in the back of your Bible to refer to as needed. Putting the Bible together took about 2 hours. There are more than 200 scripture references, covering 21 character traits, to highlight and tab, but once you’re finished, you have an amazing tool to use with your family.

It wasn’t more than a few hours after I completed ours that we had an issue with Ben and a friend not getting along. Ben was very angry that his friend had said some unkind things to him and he was ready to just bag the friendship. It was so helpful to be able to pull out our CTB and refer to scriptures on friendships, anger and unforgiveness. The flipside of the Tabbing Chart was very helpful as well. It contains questions to consider, “what would Jesus do” scriptures and prayers. One of the questions to consider for this situation was, “Have you chosen a friend who will help you follow Jesus?” Great question for all of us to ponder.

Which brings me to my next comment. While the CTB was certainly created for use with your kids, there’s so much meat in there for us as parents as well. I enjoyed my trip through both the Old and New Testament putting the Bible together. Many familiar verses, and some I had not remembered reading before.

The Child Training Bible is a tool every family should have around. What I love most is that the CTB helps me go to the Word of God in all situations with Ben, easily and quickly. The Child Training Bible not only helps you train your kids, it trains you, too.
