If you are a regular reader of my blog then you know we are planning a virtual trip around the world for this upcoming school year. So Ben and I were very excited when we were afforded the opportunity to review this product! It has been the perfect introduction to our world travels and a fun way to begin 4th grade!
The Schoolhouse Planner Module: Travel the World is a mini unit study introduction to world geography in e-book format, published by The Old Schoohouse. These monthly Planner Module mini units are packed full of information, puzzles, quizzes, links, videos, coloring pages, copywork, recipes, and a few beginning lapbooking components. This particular unit covers continents, oceans, and geography terms, with a Biblical world view.
I printed the unit at the beginning of our week, 3-holed punched it, and placed it into a pocket folder, so that at the end of the unit, we would have a notebook to keep. This also kept all of the worksheets, maps, copywork, and coloring pages together for Ben to work on as we progressed through each day. There are quite a few links to websites with maps and other information about each continent, so it really does work best to have both the computer and printed pages available. We generally spent about 30 minutes reading through the information and clicking around the links, followed by approximately 15-20 minutes of seat work, dividing the unit into 5 days. Some days Ben also spent 30 minutes or so playing some of the geography games that were conveniently linked.
We began working on the unit together, but I quickly figured out that this was a unit Ben could complete independently. I loved that! Anything I can do to move my son toward more independent work is a blessing. Though we didn’t use any of it ourselves (Ben is in 4th grade), there is a nice high school extension with a fairly decent list of links to visit, as well as suggested activities for research. This added extension makes this unit study appropriate for all ages!
These Planner Modules can be purchased separately for $7.95 each. This particular unit is the June, 2010 module. There is also a bundle price of $83.95 for all 12 modules from this past year. Some of the other 2009-2010 available units include:
- Weather, Clouds, and Related Experiments
- Federal, State, and Local Government
- Astronomy
- Aviation
- Bible Stories
- Favorite Childhood Books
