Using the Principle Approach “Word Study” idea, I began an exercise in “Scripture Word Study” with Ben today. We will be using this process to study the 3rd chapter of Proverbs over the course of the next few weeks.
This is how we studied Proverbs today, though I may tweak things a bit. I did help him some with the writing (and for this first day, looking up definitions), but my hope is that he will move toward independence in this activity fairly quickly. I began by writing the first 2 verses onto an index card, underlining several keywords I wanted him to define. We then looked the definitions up in Webster’s 1828 together, and he chose which of the listed definitions he felt were the most applicable to the Scripture. The redefinition of the scripture and prayer are Ben’s words exactly, written in his Scripture Journal.
I’m using a modified 4 R method as described in my Education Word Study post.
Scripture for study: Proverbs 3:1-2
My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.

Proverbs 3:1-2 in Ben’s Words
My son, do not let go from memory or neglect my instructions, but practice, perform, and obey my absolute authority, in your heart. For it will bring you a long life, freedom from fear and anger, and all good and desirable things.
Prayer
Dear God,
Help me obey your Word, follow your instructions, and practice and perform according to your absolute authority. Let me have a long life and freedom from fear and help me advance in every good and desirable thing. In Jesus Name, Amen
We did not look up additional Scripture to go along with our keywords with this first exercise, but we will be doing that in the future. I don’t want to miss that part. I think for a first attempt, Ben did a pretty good job here. I’m hopeful this will help bring scripture closer to his heart and more applicable to his daily life.
