About a year ago, I dropped my iPad 3 on the tram during our tour of the Florida Everglades. It cracked the screen in the corner, not affecting the use of the device at all, but making me nervous about the possibility of the crack worsening over time if I did not protect it well. I have treated it very gingerly since, while keeping my eyes open for a case that might prevent further damage.
I recently received a military-tested KRAKEN A.M.S. CASE FOR APPLE IPAD 2/3/4 – compatible with Apple iPad 2, Apple iPad 3 and Apple iPad 4 from Trident Case, for review. This case is useful for iPad users of any age and comes in several colors. I chose this gorgeous lime green.
According to the Trident Case website, Kraken A.M.S. cases meet Military Standard MIL-STD-810F for Drop, Vibration, Dust, Sand and Rain (Independently Tested).
- Drop (Mil-STD-810F, Method 516.5) – 26 drops onto concrete from 4ft.
- Vibration (Mil-STD-810F, Method 514.5) from 20-2000Hz across 3 different axes for a total of 18 hours.
- Dust (Mil-STD-810F, Method 510.4) – blow dust for 3 hours at 29 ft / sec.
- Sand (Mil-STD-810F, Method 510.4) – blow sand for 3 hours at 59 ft / sec.
- Rain (Mil-STD-810F, Method 506.4) – 7.9 inches per hour of rain at 40 mph wind velocity for 1 hour.
Pretty impressive, but to be honest, I wasn’t really willing to confirm these claims with my own iPad. However, my iPad was accidentally dropped twice, both times onto ceramic tile from about 3 feet high without further damage to the cracked screen (by one boy who shall remain nameless). One drop even landed it on the screen.
Apart from that, we’ll have to trust that the test team at Trident is telling the truth.
I can tell you that this iPad case does feel tough and protective. It comes in 3 layers — a shock-absorbing silicone inner layer, a hard, polycarbonate outer layer and a built-in screen protector. I very much appreciate that the silicone inner layer has covers for all of the ports and jacks, to give additional protection against dust.
Directions were easy to follow in order to put the case together. At first I was unsure about the screen protector. It seemed kind of thick and I was unsure of how well the touch screen would work, but much to my surprise, there have been no issues with that at all. I also wondered about the sound and whether it would be muffled, but again, no issues. In fact, I have not had any issues accessing or using any parts of my iPad because of this case.
The case does add some bulk and weight to the iPad. While it would be nice for it to be light as a feather, I feel so much better having my cracked tablet lying within the protection of this case. It’s a trade-off that is more than worth it. In fact, I like it so much that our iPad Mini and iPod Touch are now also protected by cases from Trident Case. And they aren’t even damaged. Yes, even before publishing this review, I have already made a purchase! Ben loves the cases that now protect his devices as well. And I feel confident they are less likely to get damaged now.
One huge problem we have with the iPad is fingerprints. Even with clean hands, the oils from fingers seem to leave a layer of fingerprints every time I use it. With Ben’s usually rather sticky hands, it can be a huge issue. I have noticed that this screen protector seems to resist the usual fingerprints better than an unprotected iPad screen, and easily wipes clean when they are a bit stickier.
Two other things about this case that make me happy — it’s degradable/compostable/recyclable, and it’s made in the U.S.A. Double bonus.
Trident Case carries a plethora of tough cases for everything from iPad and iPhone to Kindle Fire, Samsung Galaxy, and more.
